Study the graph
Tip: hover or tap a bar to see its exact value.
Questions
Which of the following conclusions about the sale of vegetables at the Harrison Market can be drawn from the graph?
According to the graph, which vegetable sold the most pounds in summer?
About how many more pounds of corn were sold in summer than in winter?
Eje horizontal: Pounds Sold = Libras vendidas (0 a 40).
Leyenda: barra rayada = Summer (verano); barra blanca = Winter (invierno).
Los datos del gráfico
| Verdura | Verano (libras) | Invierno (libras) | ¿Qué pasó? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lettuce — lechuga | 31 | 25 | Más en verano |
| Radishes — rábanos | 9 | 6 | Más en verano |
| Corn — maíz | 35 | 15 | Más en verano (la mayor diferencia) |
| Cucumbers — pepinos | 25 | 22 | Más en verano |
| Parsnips — chirivĂas | 7 | 10 | Más en INVIERNO — la única |
Vocabulario del gráfico
| Inglés | Español | Nota |
|---|---|---|
How to attack a graph question · Cómo atacar una pregunta de gráfico
1. Read the title, axis, and key first · Lee el título, el eje y la leyenda primero
Before you look at a single bar, read three things: the title (what is this about?), the axis label (what is being counted?), and the key (what does each bar mean?).
Here they tell you everything: vegetables, pounds sold, striped = summer, white = winter. Ten seconds spent here saves you from every trap below.
2. The biggest trap: information that isn't there · La trampa mayor: datos que no existen
“Lettuce generated more profit” sounds reasonable — lettuce sold a lot. But this graph measures pounds, not dollars. Cheap vegetables can outsell expensive ones by weight and still earn less money.
Rule: if a choice mentions something the axis never measures — money, profit, cost, customers, quality — it cannot be concluded, no matter how sensible it sounds.
3. Check every claim against the bars · Comprueba cada afirmación con las barras
Take the choices one at a time and put your finger on the bar:
- “Cucumbers most popular in winter” → compare white bars. Lettuce (25) beats cucumbers (22). False.
- “Corn outsold radishes in summer but not in winter” → corn beats radishes in both seasons. False.
- “Parsnips the only one with winter > summer” → check all five pairs. Only parsnips. True.
- “Cucumbers most popular in winter” → compara las barras blancas. La lechuga (25) supera a los pepinos (22). Falso.
- “Corn outsold radishes in summer but not in winter” → el maíz supera a los rábanos en las dos estaciones. Falso.
- “Parsnips the only one with winter > summer” → revisa los cinco pares. Solo las chirivĂas. Verdadero.
4. “Only” means check all of them · “Only” significa revisarlas todas
Words like only, all, every, and none make a claim about the whole graph. You cannot confirm them by checking one bar — one exception destroys the whole statement.
Here that's good news: checking all five pairs takes five seconds, and four of them fail immediately.
5. Estimate — don't measure · Calcula a ojo, no con regla
When a question asks “about how many more,” the answer choices are far apart on purpose. Corn's summer bar reaches about 35 and its winter bar about 15, so the gap is about 20. You don't need to be exact — you need to be closer to one choice than to the others.
Use the gridline numbers as rulers: find the nearest labeled tick and count from there.
6. A conclusion must come from the graph · La conclusión debe salir DEL gráfico
The question asks what can be drawn from the graph — not what is probably true about markets, or what you know about vegetables. Parsnips really are a winter root crop, but that's not why the answer is right. It's right because the white bar is longer than the striped one.
Same discipline as a reading passage: point to the evidence, or don't pick it.
| English | Español | Por qué importa |
|---|---|---|
| about / approximately | aproximadamente | Permite estimar; no midas exacto |
