Reading reference material · Cómo leer material de referencia
1. Don't read an index — search it · Un índice no se lee, se busca
You are not supposed to understand every line. An index is a tool: read the question first, then go hunting for the one entry it names. Everything else on the page is noise for that question.
This saves enormous time on the test. Question asks about folktales? Find the word “folktales.” Ignore the rest.
2. Indentation shows what belongs to what · La sangría muestra quién pertenece a quién
Entries touching the left margin are main topics. Indented lines underneath are subentries — specific parts of that topic. “of folktales, 239–40” is indented under Themes, so it means themes of folktales, not folktales in general.
Read the indented line together with its parent, or the meaning falls apart.
3. “See” means: you're not done · “See” significa: todavía no terminaste
Look at what Toddlers gives you: no page numbers at all, just “See First books.” That's a cross-reference — the book files this information under a different name, so you must look up that entry instead.
The question asks which topic sends you to a different part of the index. The other three hand you page numbers immediately. Only Toddlers makes you take a second step.
Those asterisks are not decoration. The note at the bottom tells you exactly what they mean: one asterisk = a box inset, two asterisks = a web. So “Textless books, 144–46**” means that material appears in a web.
Any time a chart, table, or index has a legend or footnote, read it before the questions. Test writers put it there because they plan to ask about it.
5. Alphabetical order is your map · El orden alfabético es tu mapa
Notice the sequence: Tall tales, Teacher, Teaching, Textless, Themes, Theory, Toddlers. It moves letter by letter — Te… then Th… then To…
That's how you know “First books” is far away, near the F's, on a page you can't see here. And it's how you'd find any word fast in the real thing.
FĂjate en la secuencia: Tall tales, Teacher, Teaching, Textless, Themes, Theory, Toddlers. Avanza letra por letra: Te… luego Th… luego To…
6. The question is about finding, not knowing · La pregunta es sobre BUSCAR, no sobre saber
You don't need to know anything about children's literature to answer these. You never see pages 239 or 550 — you only need to know where they are.
Reference questions test one skill: can you navigate? So answer with your finger on the entry, not with what you happen to know about toddlers or folktales.
| English | Español | Por qué importa |
|---|---|---|
| index | índice alfabético | Al final del libro, orden A–Z |
| table of contents | tabla de contenido | Al principio, orden de capítulos |
| consult | consultar | Ir a buscar en otra parte |
| See / See also | Véase / Véase también | See = obligatorio ir; See also = opcional |
| would have to | tendría que | Habla de una acción necesaria, no real |
