Exponents: Repeated Multiplication

Base, exponent, and power · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)

Show / Mostrar:

The problem

Which is equivalent to 2 × 2 × 2 ?
English

Multiply it out: 2 × 2 = 4, then 4 × 2 = 8. The answer is 8.

The same expression can also be written as 23 — “two to the third power.” Both mean exactly the same thing: the number 2 used as a factor three times.

Español

Multiplica: 2 × 2 = 4, luego 4 × 2 = 8.

The three words you need

2 — basela base — the number being multiplied
3 — exponentel exponente — how many times the base is used as a factor
8 — power / valuela potencia — the result, 23 = 8
Read it out loud, correctly: 23 is “two to the third power,” or “two cubed.” It is not “two times three.” That one sentence prevents the most common wrong answer on the whole topic.

Why each wrong answer is tempting

ChoiceWhere it comes fromWhy it fails
6Multiplying the base by the exponent: 2 × 3The exponent counts the factors; it is not one of them.
82 × 2 × 2Correct. Same as 23.
32Base and exponent swapped32 = 3 × 3 = 9, not 8.
42Squaring the partial product 2 × 242 = 16 — that multiplies by 2 two extra times.

The four steps, every time

English

Every exponent question is the same short routine:

1Name the base — the big number on the bottom.
2Name the exponent — the small raised number: how many factors.
3Write it out long — 24 becomes 2 × 2 × 2 × 2.
4Multiply two at a time — never all at once in your head.

Worked out: 34

3^4 = 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 write it out long

        3 x 3 = 9 multiply the first pair
        9 x 3 = 27 then the next factor
       27 x 3 = 81 and the last one

3^4 = 81 four 3s, not 3 x 4
The trap: 3 × 4 = 12, and 12 is almost always one of the answer choices. Writing the factors out long — even on scratch paper — makes that mistake impossible.

Two rules that show up constantly

Rule 1 · Order matters · El orden importa

English

25 and 52 are not the same. 25 = 32; 52 = 25. Swapping the base and the exponent changes the value.

Whenever a question offers both versions, that is the point of the question.

Español

25 y 52 no son lo mismo. 25 = 32; 52 = 25.

Rule 2 · Exponent of 1 and 0 · Exponente de 1 y de 0

English

Any number to the first power is itself: 71 = 7. Any nonzero number to the zero power is 1: 90 = 1, 1000 = 1.

The zero exponent feels wrong the first time. Memorize it — the answer is always 1, never 0.

Where exponents come from: area and volume

English

A square 6 feet on each side has an area of 6 × 6 = 36 square feet, written 62. That is why the second power is called “squared.”

A cube 6 feet on each edge holds 6 × 6 × 6 = 216 cubic feet, written 63 — “cubed.” The words are literal descriptions of shapes.

Show / Mostrar:

English

This is the error the test is built around. 23 is not 6. 54 is not 20. 103 is not 30.

That wrong product is placed in the answer choices on purpose, and it is usually the smallest number listed. If your answer is the smallest choice, stop and check that you expanded instead of multiplied.

2. Count the factors, not the number · Cuenta los factores, no el número

English

When a question shows the long form — 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 — do not compute it. Just count: five 4s, so the answer is 45.

The base is the number you see repeated; the exponent is how many times you see it. Circle them as you count so you don't lose your place in a long string.

3. Estimate with powers of 10 · Estima con potencias de 10

English

102 = 100, 103 = 1,000, 104 = 10,000. The exponent equals the number of zeros. That single fact sizes up almost any answer.

Example: 93 must be a little under 1,000, because 9 is just under 10. (It's 729.) Any choice in the tens or the ten-thousands is out immediately.

Español

4. Multiply in pairs, write each result · Multiplica en pares y anota cada resultado

English

For 26, don't try to hold six factors in your head. Write the running total: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64. Six numbers, six factors — the count is built into the list.

Doubling and tripling chains are fast and self-checking. Losing track is what causes wrong answers here, not the arithmetic itself.

5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante

English

Start with the long form, not the symbol. Ask the student to write 2 × 2 × 2 first, get 8, and only then show that 23 is shorthand for what they already did. The notation should arrive last.

Use objects: three stacks that double, or a 3-by-3 square of tiles. Ask “how many 2s do you see?” rather than giving the rule. When a student answers 6, don't say “wrong” — ask them to write out the multiplication and let the paper correct them.

6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo

English

Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each — generous for exponents, since most are one line of arithmetic. Expect to finish early and use the leftover minutes to re-expand the two you were least sure about.

If a problem passes 90 seconds, you are probably second-guessing a correct answer. Write the factors out once, take that result, and move on.
