Reading a Bar Graph

Scale, bars, and totals · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)

The problem

Four people worked as a team on a project. The graph above shows the amount of time each person spent on the project.
What was the total number of hours spent by the team?
English

Read each bar, write the number down, then add: 3 + 5 + 4 + 3 = 15 hours.

The graph is not asking you to do anything clever. It is asking you to read four numbers accurately and add them. Almost every wrong answer here comes from misreading one bar, not from the addition.

The four parts of the graph

Axisel eje — the two edges: names on one side, numbers on the other
Scalela escala — the numbers along the bottom: 0, 2, 4, 6
Gridlinela línea de cuadrícula — each vertical line, here worth 1 hour
Barla barra — its length is the value for that person
Do this first, every time: find what one gridline is worth. Here the labels jump 0, 2, 4, 6 — but there is a line halfway between each label, so each line is worth 1, not 2. Reading the scale wrong changes every answer on the page.

The four steps, every time

English
1Read the scale — how much is one gridline worth?
2Read each bar — follow the end of the bar straight down to the number.
3Write the numbers down — on paper, in a list, before you calculate anything.
4Answer the question that was asked — total? difference? most? Re-read it.
¿diferencia? ¿el mayor? Reléelo.

Worked out

PersonBar ends atHours
Maggie1 line past 23
Jeff1 line past 45
Ellieexactly on 44
Rich1 line past 23
Total 15
3 + 5 + 4 + 3

Group the easy pairs:
  3 + 3 = 6
  5 + 4 = 9
  6 + 9 = 15 total = 15 hours

Why each wrong answer is tempting

ChoiceWhere it comes from
12Reading Ellie's bar as 3 and Jeff's as 3 — two bars misread by one line.
13Reading Jeff's bar as 4 and Maggie's as 2 — one line short on two bars.
14Reading one bar one gridline short. The single most common error.
15Correct. 3 + 5 + 4 + 3.
Estimate before you add: four bars, none shorter than 3, none longer than 5. So the total has to be somewhere between 12 and 20 — and near the middle. An answer of 8 or 25 would be wrong before you check the arithmetic.

The same graph, four different questions

English

Test writers reuse one graph for several question types. Learn to spot which one you are being asked:

  • Total — “altogether,” “in all,” “combined.” Add every bar. (15)
  • Difference — “how many more,” “how much longer.” Subtract two bars. (Jeff − Rich = 2)
  • Most / least — just look; no arithmetic at all. (Jeff most, Maggie and Rich tied for least)
  • Combination — “which two together equal…” Add pairs until one fits. (Maggie + Rich = 6)

(Maggie + Rich = 6)

When the scale is not 1

English

Here the labels read 0, 10, 20, 30, and there is one gridline between each label — so each line is worth 5, not 1 and not 10.

Tuesday's bar reaches the line halfway between 20 and 30, which is 25. Counting lines instead of reading the scale would give 5. Always divide: from 0 to 10 there are 2 spaces, so 10 ÷ 2 = 5 per space.

Show / Mostrar:

1. Read the scale before you read the bars · Lee la escala antes que las barras

English

Pick two labeled numbers next to each other, count the spaces between them, and divide. Labels 0 and 10 with two spaces between them means each space is 5.

Do this in the first five seconds, out loud if you can: “each line is 5.” Every question on that graph depends on it, so getting it wrong costs you the whole set, not one point.

2. Write the numbers down · Anota los números

English

Copy the four values onto scratch paper as a short list before adding: 3, 5, 4, 3. Now you are adding numbers instead of pictures, and you can check your reading without looking back at the graph over and over.

It also protects you when the next question uses the same graph — the values are already in front of you.

3. Use your finger or your pencil edge · Usa el dedo o el borde del lápiz

English

Bars that end between two gridlines are read wrong more than any other kind. Lay the pencil straight down from the end of the bar to the number line below it, and read where it lands.

If a bar truly ends halfway between two lines, the value is halfway between the two numbers — between 20 and 30 that is 25.

4. Underline the question word · Subraya la palabra clave

English

Total, altogether, in all, combined → add. How many more, difference, longer, fewer → subtract. Most, least, greatest, fewest → just look.

A student who reads every bar perfectly and then subtracts when the question said “in all” still gets zero. The wrong operation is scored exactly like a wrong reading.

5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante

English

Have the student label the graph before answering: write the number at the end of each bar, right on the paper. The graph becomes a list of numbers, and the reading step is finished before the thinking step begins.

When a student misreads a bar, don't give the value — ask “show me where that bar ends” and let them trace it down to the scale themselves. The mistake is almost always the scale, not the counting, and they need to find that out on their own paper.

6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo

English

Graph questions come in sets built on one picture. Spend the first fifteen seconds reading the scale and listing the values — that time is repaid on every question in the set.

Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each. Reading the graph once carefully is faster than reading it four times in a hurry.

Try this next / Practica esto: go back to any question you missed and write the value at the end of every bar before rereading the question. If the values were right and the answer was wrong, the mistake was the question word, not the graph.
