The problem

English

You cannot add thirds to sixths, any more than you can add 3 feet to 6 inches without converting first. The pieces have to be the same size.

Sixths work for both: 23 is the same amount as 46. Then 46 + 16 = 56 — four pieces plus one more piece is five pieces, all the same size.

Never add the denominators. The bottom number is not a quantity — it names the size of the piece. Adding 3 + 6 to get ninths invents a piece size that was never in the problem, and it makes the answer smaller than what you started with: 39 is less than 23, and you were adding.

Worked out

  2 1
 --- + --- the denominators are different
  3 6

6 is a multiple of 3, so use 6 for both.

  2 2 x 2 4
 --- = ------- = --- multiply top AND bottom by 2
  3 3 x 2 6

  4 1 4 + 1 5
 --- + --- = ------- = --- add the tops, keep the bottom
  6 6 6 6

5/6 cannot be reduced, so it is the final answer.

Why each wrong answer is tempting

ChoiceWhere it comes from
29Adding the denominators (3 + 6 = 9) and keeping a numerator from the problem.
39Adding straight across: tops together, bottoms together. The most common fraction error there is.
36Adding the tops (2 + 1 = 3) but keeping the bigger denominator without renaming 23 first.
56Correct. 46 + 16.

The four steps, every time

English
1Look at the denominators. Same? Skip to step 3.
2Find a common denominator. If the small one divides the big one, use the big one. Otherwise multiply them.
3Add the numerators only. The denominator does not change.
4Reduce. Answers on tests are always in lowest terms.
Español
1Mira los denominadores. ¿Iguales?
Si no, multiplícalos.
3Suma solo los numeradores. El denominador no cambia.
4Reduce.

Finding the common denominator fast

ProblemAskCommon denominator
2/3 + 1/6Does 3 go into 6?6 — use the bigger one
1/2 + 1/4Does 2 go into 4?4
1/2 + 1/3Does 2 go into 3?No → 2 × 3 = 6
3/4 + 1/6Does 4 go into 6?No → 12 (both divide 12)
English

Multiplying the two denominators always gives a common denominator. It is not always the smallest one — for 34 + 16 it gives 24 when 12 would do — but it always works, and you can reduce at the end. When you're stuck, multiply.

Estimate first: is the answer reasonable?

English

23 is already more than half. Adding anything makes it bigger, so the answer must be more than 23 and less than 1.

That one sentence kills three of the four choices: 29, 39 and 36 are all smaller than 23. A sum that comes out smaller than what you started with is always wrong.

Show / Mostrar:

1. Check the denominators before you do anything · Revisa los denominadores antes que nada

English

Same denominators means you can add immediately. Different denominators means one extra step, and skipping it produces the wrong answer every time.

Circle the two bottom numbers before you start. It sounds childish; it prevents the single biggest error on this topic, which is adding unlike pieces as if they were alike.

2. Whatever you do to the bottom, do to the top · Lo que le haces abajo, hazlo arriba

English

To turn 23 into sixths you multiply the bottom by 2 — so the top gets multiplied by 2 as well: 46. Both numbers, same multiplier, every time.

Multiplying only the bottom changes the value; multiplying both changes only how it looks. 23 and 46 are the same amount written two ways.

3. Compare to one half · Compáralo con un medio

English

A fraction is more than half when the top is more than half the bottom. 23: is 2 more than half of 3? Yes. 39: is 3 more than half of 9? No.

Use it to sanity-check every answer. Two fractions that are each more than half must add to more than 1 — so 23 + 34 cannot possibly be less than 1, and any choice under 1 is out.

No.

4. Reduce before you look for your answer · Reduce antes de buscar tu respuesta

English

If you got 48 and the choices show 12, you were right — you just stopped one step early. Divide top and bottom by the same number until nothing divides both.

Subtraction works exactly like addition here: same common denominator, subtract the tops, reduce. Only the sign changes.

5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante

English

Start with something physical: two pizzas cut differently, or paper strips folded into thirds and sixths. Lay the thirds strip on the sixths strip and let the student see that one third covers exactly two sixths. That single observation is the entire lesson.

When a student writes 39, don't correct the arithmetic — ask “you added something to two thirds; is your answer bigger or smaller than two thirds?” Let them discover that the sum shrank. Students remember a contradiction they found themselves far longer than a rule they were told.

6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo

English

Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each. A fraction addition with a common denominator already in sight takes about twenty; one that needs renaming takes forty. You should finish early.

Use the leftover time to convert your answers back — subtract one of the original fractions from your sum and see whether you land on the other one.
