Percent of a Number
Three ways to find it · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)
The problem
Percent means “out of 100.” 20% is 20 out of every 100 — and 300 contains three hundreds, so it is 20 + 20 + 20 = 60.
That is the whole idea. Every method below is a faster way of doing exactly that.
Three methods — pick the one that fits the numbers
Method 1 · The 10% trick (fastest) · El truco del 10%
To find 10% of any number, move the decimal point one place left. 10% of 300 is 30.
20% is two of those: 30 + 30 = 60. This works without a calculator, without fractions, and it builds every other percent you need: 5% is half of 10%, 30% is three tens, 15% is one ten plus one five.
Method 2 · The fraction · La fracción
20% = 20100 = 15. So 20% of 300 means 15 of 300 — divide by 5: 300 ÷ 5 = 60.
Best when the percent is a friendly fraction: 25% is a quarter, 50% is half, 75% is three quarters.
Method 3 · The decimal · El decimal
Move the percent's decimal point two places left to make it a decimal, then multiply. 20% → 0.20, and 0.20 × 300 = 60.
Best for awkward percents like 7% or 12.5%, where there is no easy fraction and the ten-trick takes too many steps.
All three land in the same place: 10% trick: 10% of 300 = 30, so 20% = 30 + 30 = 60 fraction: 20% = 1/5, so 300 / 5 = 60 decimal: 20% = 0.20, so 0.20 x 300 = 60
Why each wrong answer is tempting
| Choice | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| 15 | Dividing 300 by 20. That answers a different question — 15 is 5% of 300, not 20%. |
| 20 | Copying the percent itself. 20% is a rate, not an amount, until it is applied to 300. |
| 60 | Correct. 20% of 300. |
| 240 | That is 80% — the part left over. It answers “how much is not in the 20%.” |
Build any percent from 10% and 1%
| Percent | How to get it | Of 300 |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | Move the decimal one place left | 30 |
| 1% | Move the decimal two places left | 3 |
| 5% | Half of 10% | 15 |
| 20% | 10% doubled | 60 |
| 15% | 10% + 5% | 45 |
| 30% | 10% three times | 90 |
| 50% | Half | 150 |
Percents worth knowing as fractions
| Percent | Fraction | Shortcut |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | 110 | ÷ 10 |
| 20% | 15 | ÷ 5 |
| 25% | 14 | ÷ 4 |
| 50% | 12 | ÷ 2 |
| 75% | 34 | ÷ 4, then × 3 |
| 100% | 1 | the whole thing |
The check that catches most errors
A percent under 100 always gives an answer smaller than the number you started with. 20% of 300 must be less than 300 — and much less, since 20% is only a fifth.
Half of 300 is 150, and 20% is well under half, so the answer belongs somewhere below 150. That rules out 240 immediately. 100% would be 300; 50% would be 150; 20% is 60.

10:00 Question 1 of 8
Percent strategy · Estrategia con porcentajes
1. Find 10% first, always · Halla el 10% primero, siempre
Moving the decimal one place left takes a second and gives you a building block for everything else. 10% of 80 is 8, so 30% is 24 and 5% is 4.
This is also the method to teach: it works in the head, in a store, and on a test where calculators aren't allowed. Students who own the 10% trick stop fearing percent problems.
2. Estimate against 50% and 100% · Estima contra el 50% y el 100%
Before calculating, place the answer between landmarks. 100% of 300 is 300. 50% is 150. So 20% has to be well under 150 — any choice above that is out before you begin.
This one habit eliminates the “too big” distractor on nearly every percent question, and those distractors are there precisely because students don't check.
3. Watch what the question actually asks · Fíjate qué pide de verdad la pregunta
“30% off a $40 jacket” can be asking for the discount ($12) or the sale price ($28). Both numbers will be among the choices.
Underline the last few words of the question before you solve. On a discount problem, the sale price is always the original minus the percent — one extra subtraction that half of all wrong answers skip.
4. Know the reverse question too · Conoce también la pregunta al revés
“5 is what percent of 20?” is the same relationship read backwards. Put the part over the whole and turn it into hundredths: 520 = 25100 = 25%.
The part is the smaller number and the whole comes after the word “of.” Getting them backwards gives 400%, which the estimate check would immediately flag as impossible.
5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante
Draw a hundred-square grid and shade 20 squares. Then say: “300 is three of these grids. How many shaded squares altogether?” The student counts 20, 40, 60 and has the answer before any procedure is mentioned.
Use money for the 10% trick — 10% of $50 is $5 is obvious to almost everyone, and tips and sales give the practice a reason to exist. When a student answers 15 for “20% of 300,” ask what they divided and why; they almost always divided by the 20, and hearing themselves say it is the correction.
6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo
With the 10% trick, most percent questions take fifteen seconds. Word problems take longer only because of the reading — the arithmetic is the same.
Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each, so percents should leave you time in the bank. If one is taking a full minute, check whether you're solving for the part when the question wants the remainder.
| English | Español | Qué es |
|---|---|---|
