Decimals and Fractions

Writing a decimal as an equivalent fraction · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)

Show / Mostrar:

The problem

Which of the following is equivalent to 1.2 ?
English

Say the decimal out loud: “one and two tenths.” The word you say at the end is the denominator.

So 1.2 = 1210 = 1210, and dividing top and bottom by 2 gives 65.

Worked out

1.2 -> "one and two tenths"

        2 12
   1 + ---- = ---- put the digits over the place value
       10 10

   12 / 2 6
  -------- = --- divide top and bottom by 2
   10 / 2 5

Check: 6 / 5 = 1.2 OK
The check takes five seconds: a fraction is just a division. Divide the top by the bottom and see whether you get the decimal back. 6 ÷ 5 = 1.2 ✓. That single step confirms the answer and rejects every other choice.

English

Notice how much you can rule out before dividing anything. 1.2 is a little more than 1, so the fraction must have a top slightly larger than its bottom.

56 has a smaller top, so it is under 1 — out. 12010 and 6005 have tops many times larger than their bottoms — both far too big. Only 65 is even in the running.

English

Count the digits after the decimal point; that is the number of zeros in the denominator. Then write all the digits, ignoring the point, on top.

1.2 has one digit after the point → denominator 10, numerator 12. 0.06 has two → denominator 100, numerator 6.

Both directions, one idea. A fraction bar means “divide.” To go from fraction to decimal, divide the top by the bottom. To go from decimal to fraction, write the digits over the place value and reduce. Same relationship, read two ways.

Show / Mostrar:

1. Say the decimal out loud · Di el decimal en voz alta

English

“Two tenths” already contains the fraction: 2 over 10. “Seventy-five hundredths” is 75 over 100. The English name of the decimal is the fraction, spoken.

Reading “one point two” hides that; reading “one and two tenths” gives it away. Teach the second reading and half the work disappears.

2. Divide the choices instead of converting · Divide las opciones en vez de convertir

English

On a multiple-choice test you never have to build the fraction yourself. Take each choice, divide top by bottom, and see which one gives the decimal in the question.

It is often faster, and it is immune to reducing errors. Start with the choice whose numbers look closest — here, the one whose top is just slightly bigger than its bottom.

3. Judge the size before you calculate · Juzga el tamaño antes de calcular

English

Top smaller than bottom means less than 1. Top bigger means more than 1. Top a lot bigger means a lot more than 1.

1.2 is just past 1, so the right fraction has a top just past its bottom. That reasoning alone answers this question — 65 is the only choice shaped that way.

4. Reduce, and expect an improper fraction · Reduce, y espera una fracción impropia

English

1210 is correct but will not be printed — test answers are in lowest terms. Divide both by 2 to get 65.

Also expect the improper form. 1.2 equals 115 and 65 equally; both are right, but the answer choices usually show one or the other. If your mixed number isn't listed, convert it before assuming you made an error.

5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante

English

Use money. 1.2 dollars is a dollar and two dimes; a dime is a tenth of a dollar, so that is 1 and 2 tenths. Students who freeze at “1.2” can handle “a dollar and twenty cents” instantly, and 20 cents is 20/100 = 1/5 of a dollar.

Then have them say every decimal the long way for a week — “three and four tenths,” not “three point four.” The conversion becomes something they hear rather than something they compute.

Español

Usa dinero.

6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo

English

With the common equivalences memorized, these take ten seconds. Without them, each one is a long division. The table in Tab 1 is the highest-value thing on this page to learn by heart.

Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each, so conversions should bank time for the harder items later in the section.
