Number Patterns in a Table
Finding the rule and extending it · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)
The problem
| Month | Jan. | Feb. | Mar. | Apr. | … |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weight (pounds) | 8 | 19.5 | 31 | 42.5 | … |
Step one: find the increase. Subtract each month from the next one:
19.5 − 8 = 11.5 · 31 − 19.5 = 11.5 · 42.5 − 31 = 11.5
The same every time, which is what the problem promised. The pattern adds 11.5 pounds a month.
Step two: keep going to June. May = 42.5 + 11.5 = 54, and June = 54 + 11.5 = 65.5 pounds.
Paso uno: halla el aumento. Resta cada mes del siguiente:
19.5 − 8 = 11.5 · 31 − 19.5 = 11.5 · 42.5 − 31 = 11.5
Mayo = 42.5 + 11.5 = 54, y junio = 54 + 11.5 = 65.5 libras.
The safest method: write out every month
| Month | Jan. | Feb. | Mar. | Apr. | May | Jun. |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weight (pounds) | 8 | 19.5 | 31 | 42.5 | 54 | 65.5 |
For a short extension like this, do not use a formula. Extend the table two columns and you are done. Writing the months down makes it impossible to land on the wrong one.
Where each answer choice comes from
| Choice | Which month it really is | The error |
|---|---|---|
| 54 lb | May | Stopped one step early. |
| 65.5 lb | June | Correct. |
| 77 lb | July | Took one step too many — counted months instead of steps. |
| 88.5 lb | August | Two steps too many. |
Every wrong choice here is a real month in the pattern. That is deliberate: the question is not testing whether you can add 11.5, it is testing whether you stop on the right month.
The rule, when the jump is long
value = first value + (increase) x (number of steps) June: 8 + 11.5 x 5 = 8 + 57.5 = 65.5 5 steps from January December: 8 + 11.5 x 11 = 8 + 126.5 = 134.5 11 steps from January
The number of steps is always one less than the position you are counting to. June is the 6th month, so it is 5 steps from the 1st.
Use the formula when the target is far away — asking for December would mean eleven additions by hand. For two or three steps, extending the table is faster and safer.
Three kinds of pattern
Always test the difference first: subtract each pair. If the differences match, it is an adding pattern. If they don't, check whether each term is a multiple of the one before it.
In this problem the wording — “increases by the same amount each month” — tells you it is an adding pattern before you compute anything.

1. Find the difference and check it twice · Halla la diferencia y compruébala dos veces
Subtract the first pair, then a second pair. If they match, you have the rule. If they don't, you either misread a number or the pattern isn't an adding one.
Write the difference above each gap in the table. Those little numbers are your proof that the rule is right before you extend it — and if one gap disagrees, you have found a misread digit rather than a wrong answer.
2. Extend the table instead of jumping · Extiende la tabla en vez de saltar
Add the missing columns and label them. Two extra additions cost about ten seconds and remove the entire category of counting errors.
Say each label out loud as you write it: “May, fifty-four. June, sixty-five point five.” The month you stop on is the month you were asked for.
3. Steps are one fewer than terms · Los pasos son uno menos que los términos
From the 1st term to the 6th term is 5 steps. From the 1st to the 10th is 9 steps. Subtract 1, always.
This is the single most common error in pattern questions, and test writers put the off-by-one value in the choices every time. If your answer is one step past the target, you counted terms where you should have counted gaps.
Del 1º al 6º término hay 5 pasos. Del 1º al 10º hay 9 pasos. Resta 1, siempre.
4. Check that your answer fits the story · Revisa que tu respuesta tenga sentido
The weight is growing, so June must be more than April's 42.5 — but not enormously more, since only two months passed. An answer of 200 would be wrong on sight.
Rough check: about 11 or 12 pounds a month for two more months is roughly 20 to 25 more pounds, landing near 65. That estimate confirms 65.5 and rejects 77 before you check anything else.
5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante
Have the student draw arrows between the columns and write the jump on each arrow. The arrows are the pattern made visible, and counting arrows instead of boxes fixes the off-by-one error permanently.
When a student answers 77, don't say it's wrong — ask them to point to July on their own table. They will see that their answer sits one column past the question. Discovering it themselves is what stops it happening again.
6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo
A short extension is a 30-second question: one subtraction to find the rule, two additions to reach the answer. Long jumps need the formula, and those run closer to a minute.
Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each. Pattern questions should give you time back — as long as you spend ten of those seconds writing the extra columns rather than doing it in your head.
| English | Español | Qué es |
|---|---|---|
| total | total | La suma acumulada |
| at the end of | al final de | Señala en qué término parar |
