Math · Lesson 36
Perimeter of a Rectangle
The distance around · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)
The question
What should the paraprofessional say?
Find the sum of the lengths of the four sides. Perimeter is the distance all the way around the outside of a shape — so you add the sides, you do not multiply them.
That answer works for every rectangle, and for every other polygon too. It is the definition, not a formula to memorize.
Worked out
A rectangle 8 ft long and 3 ft wide. Add the four sides: 8 + 3 + 8 + 3 = 22 ft Or, since opposite sides match: 2 × 8 + 2 × 3 = 16 + 6 = 22 ft 2 × (8 + 3) = 2 × 11 = 22 ft All three are the same idea written three ways.
A rectangle has only two different side lengths, and each one appears twice. That is why 2L + 2W works — it is just a shortcut for adding the same two numbers twice each.
A student who forgets the formula has lost nothing. They can still count the four sides and add.
Why each wrong answer is tempting
| Response | What it actually finds | |
|---|---|---|
| Product of the four sides | 8 × 3 × 8 × 3 = 576 | Nothing useful |
| Product of the length and the width | 8 × 3 = 24 | The area, not the perimeter |
| Sum of the lengths of the four sides | 8 + 3 + 8 + 3 = 22 | The perimeter |
| Sum of the length and the width | 8 + 3 = 11 | Half the perimeter |
Two of the wrong choices are near misses, and that is deliberate. “Product of length and width” is the area formula — correct math, wrong question. “Sum of the length and the width” is exactly half the answer, because it counts each side only once.
Half the perimeter is the more revealing error. It means the student understands that perimeter is addition; they just forgot that a rectangle has four sides, not two.
Perimeter and area side by side
| Perimeter | Area | |
|---|---|---|
| What it measures | Distance around the edge | Space covered inside |
| Operation | Add the sides | Multiply length × width |
| 8 ft by 3 ft | 22 ft | 24 sq ft |
| Units | feet, inches, meters | square feet, square inches |
| Real job | Fencing, trim, framing, ribbon | Carpet, paint, tile, sod |
The unit is the fastest check there is. Perimeter answers come in plain feet because you are measuring a length. Area answers come in square feet because you are covering a surface. If a student writes “22 square feet” for a perimeter, the number is right and the thinking has slipped.
Answering as a paraprofessional
Notice that the correct response never mentions L and W. The best answer a paraprofessional can give is the one the student can apply to a triangle, a pentagon, or an odd-shaped room next week — and “add up the sides” travels everywhere that 2L + 2W does not.

1. Trace the edge with a finger · Recorre el borde con el dedo
Start at one corner and go all the way around, saying each side length out loud as you pass it: “eight, three, eight, three.” When you are back where you started, add what you said.
This is not a beginner's crutch. It is the definition of perimeter, performed. Students who trace stop losing the two sides that have no numbers printed on them.
2. Label the unmarked sides first · Marca primero los lados sin etiqueta
Most drawings label only two sides, because opposite sides of a rectangle are equal. Before computing anything, write the missing two numbers on the figure.
A student looking at a rectangle with an 8 and a 3 on it sees two numbers and reaches for 8 + 3 = 11. Once all four are written down, that mistake disappears.
3. Let the units catch the mix-up · Deja que las unidades atrapen la confusión
Perimeter is measured in feet, inches, meters. Area is measured in square feet, square inches. Ask yourself which the question wants before you pick an operation.
“How much fence?” is feet → perimeter → add. “How much carpet?” is square feet → area → multiply. The unit in the question is the instruction.
4. Work backward when the perimeter is given · Trabaja al revés cuando dan el perímetro
If the perimeter is 20 and the width is 4: the two widths use 8, leaving 12 for the two lengths, so each length is 6. Subtract what you know, then split what is left.
Check by adding all four back: 6 + 4 + 6 + 4 = 20. Working backward is only safe when you close the loop and check forward.
5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante
Use the room you are standing in. “If we put tape along every wall where it meets the floor, how much tape? That is perimeter. If we tile the floor, how many tiles? That is area.” Then walk the perimeter with them, counting steps.
When a student multiplies instead of adding, don't say “wrong.” Say: “you found the area — that is a real answer to a different question. Which one did we want?” That keeps the correct work they did and moves the problem to reading the question.
6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo
Perimeter questions are among the fastest points on the test once you spot the word. Scan for “perimeter,” “around,” “fence,” “border,” “trim,” “frame” — all of them mean add the sides.
Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each. Circle the key word first; it decides the operation before you touch a single number.
| English | Español | Qué es |
|---|---|---|
