Rounding to Check an Answer

Round to the named place, then estimate · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)

The problem

37,931.522,100.253
The situation · La situación
Student's answer: 1.80605

Paraprofessional: "Check it by rounding each number
                     to the nearest thousand."
English

Rounded to the nearest thousand, 37,931.52 becomes 38,000 and 2,100.253 becomes 2,000. So the correct response is 38,000 ÷ 2,000, which is about 19.

That estimate does its job immediately: the student answered 1.80605, but the answer should be near 19. The real quotient is 18.06 — the student's decimal point is one place too far left.

Which digit is the thousands place?

ten
thousands
thousandshundredstensones tenthshundredths
37931 .52
English

The thousands digit is the 7. To round to that place, look only at the digit immediately to its right — the 9 in the hundreds place. Nine is 5 or more, so the 7 rounds up to 8 and everything to its right becomes zero: 38,000.

For 2,100.253 the thousands digit is 2 and the hundreds digit is 1. One is less than 5, so the 2 stays: 2,000.

Round to the place the question named — not to the roundest-looking number. 40,000 feels like a natural estimate for 37,931, but 40,000 is 37,931 rounded to the nearest ten thousand. The instruction said thousand, and the thousands place gives 38,000.

Every wrong choice rounds to the wrong place

37,900 ÷ 2,100Hundredsabout 18
38,000 ÷ 2,000Thousands — as instructed19 — correct
English

Notice that three of these four are usable estimates. 37,900 ÷ 2,100 is actually the closest to the true answer, and 40,000 ÷ 2,000 = 20 would also expose the student's error. They are still wrong responses, because the question asked for one specific place value.

That is what makes this a place-value question wearing an estimation costume. Being close is not the standard here — following the instruction is.

Worked out

Round each number to the nearest thousand:

37,931.52 thousands digit 7, next digit 9 → round up
                 38,000

      2,100.253 thousands digit 2, next digit 1 → stays
                 2,000

   Estimate: 38,000 ÷ 2,000 = 38 ÷ 2 = 19

   Student said: 1.80605
   True answer: 18.06

The estimate is about 19, so the answer must be
near 19 — not near 1.8. The decimal point moved
   one place too far left.

Why estimating catches this kind of error

Misplaced decimalOff by a factor of 10, 100, 1000. An estimate catches this instantly.
Dropped digitA missing zero shifts the whole answer. The estimate won't match.
Wrong operationMultiplied instead of divided — the estimate lands nowhere near.
English

An estimate is not a second attempt at the answer. It is a rough size check — a way of asking “should this be near 2, near 20, or near 200?” before trusting the digits.

The student's arithmetic here was almost entirely right: 1, 8, 0, 6 are the true digits. Only the decimal point went wrong, and only an estimate would have caught that.

Suggesting the check as a paraprofessional

English

Do not correct the answer. Hand back the tool: “round both numbers to the nearest thousand and divide those — then compare.” The student finds their own error, which is worth far more than being told.

Be exact about the place value when you name it, and expect the student to be exact back. “Round it” is not an instruction; “round it to the nearest thousand” is. The whole item above turns on that one word.

Show / Mostrar:

1. Underline the place, then look one digit right · Subraya la posición y mira un dígito a la derecha

English

Two marks, every time. Underline the digit in the named place, then circle the single digit immediately to its right. That circled digit decides: 5 or more rounds up, 4 or less stays.

Nothing further right matters. In 37,931.52 the .52 has no vote at all when you are rounding to the thousands place.

2. Count places from the decimal point · Cuenta posiciones desde el punto decimal

English

Going left from the decimal point: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands. In 37,931.52 that lands on the 7. Going right: tenths, hundredths, thousandths.

Watch the trap in the names. Thousands is four places left of the decimal point; thousandths is three places right of it. One letter, an enormous difference.

3. Divide the rounded numbers the easy way · Divide los redondeados de la forma fácil

English

38,000 ÷ 2,000 does not need long division. Cross off the three zeros on both sides and it becomes 38 ÷ 2 = 19.

That is the whole reason for rounding: an estimate you cannot do in your head is not saving anyone time. If the rounded division is still hard, round to a bigger place.

Español

38,000 ÷ 2,000 no necesita división larga.

4. Compare the estimate to the answer by size, not by digits · Compara por tamaño, no por dígitos

English

1.80605 and 19 share almost every digit, and that is exactly why the student was fooled. Ask only: are these the same size? One is under 2, the other is nearly 20. That is a factor of ten.

An estimate does not confirm the digits. It confirms the magnitude — whether the answer belongs in the ones, the tens, or the hundreds.

5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante

English

Ask the size question before any arithmetic: “About how many 2,000s fit into 38,000?” Most students will say “a lot — like twenty.” They have just estimated without being told to, and now 1.80605 looks obviously wrong to them.

When they hand you an answer, resist grading it. Ask “does that seem about right?” A student who develops that reflex catches their own decimal-point slips for the rest of their life; a student who is told the answer catches this one.

6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo

English

On a question like this you never divide the original numbers. Round, divide the easy version, and match it against the choices. Doing 37,931.52 ÷ 2,100.253 by hand would cost minutes and earn nothing.

Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each. Read the place value the question names, circle that word, and let it pick your answer.

Hacer 37,931.52 ÷ 2,100.253 a mano costaría minutos y no ganaría nada.
