Reading a Balance Beam
Which side is heavier, and what follows · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)
The problem
Which conclusion can be drawn from the figure?
The right side is down, so the right side is heavier. That gives one inequality:
4 > + 2
Now take two triangles off each side. Two are left on the right, and the box is left alone on the left, so one box is less than two triangles.
Worked out
Let b = the weight of one box Let t = the weight of one triangle The right side is lower, so the right side is heavier: 4t > b + 2t Take 2t off both sides — the tilt does not change: 4t − 2t > b + 2t − 2t 2t > b which is the same as b < 2t One box weighs LESS than two triangles.
Testing all four conclusions
| Conclusion | In symbols | Does the picture support it? |
|---|---|---|
| One box is less than two triangles | b < 2t | Yes — exactly what follows |
| One box equals two triangles | b = 2t | No — then the beam would be level, and it is tilted |
| One box is greater than two triangles | b > 2t | No — then the left side would go down |
| Four triangles are less than one box | 4t < b | No — backwards; the four triangles are the heavy side |
The three wrong conclusions are the three other things that could be said about b and 2t, and each one describes a picture that is not this picture: level, tilted the other way, or tilted much further the other way.
The last choice is worth a second look. Four triangles outweigh a box plus two more triangles, so they certainly outweigh the box by itself. Saying they weigh less than one box reverses the figure completely.
What the beam is telling you
| What you see | What it means | Symbol |
|---|---|---|
| Left side down | Left side is heavier | left > right |
| Beam is level | The two sides weigh the same | left = right |
| Right side down | Right side is heavier | left < right |
The side that goes down is the heavy side. That is the only physical fact in the whole problem, and everything else is algebra done on top of it.
One caution: a tilt tells you which side is heavier, never by how much. A beam tipped slightly and a beam tipped steeply both mean the same thing here — greater than.
Using the beam with a student
This is why a paraprofessional reaches for a balance beam in the first place: it turns an abstract inequality into something a student can see and, ideally, touch. The step “subtract 2t from both sides” becomes “take two triangles off each side,” and nobody has to be told why the tilt survives.
If a real balance is available, build it with identical objects and let the student lift things off. The rule they discover by hand is the rule they keep.

10:00 Question 1 of 8
Balance strategy · Estrategia de balanza
1. The side that goes down is heavier · El lado que baja pesa más
Before counting anything, look at the tilt and say which side is lower. Here the right side is lower, so the right side is heavier — and that is the direction the inequality sign will point.
Write it down as words first: “four triangles are heavier than one box plus two triangles.” Then translate to symbols. Reversing the sign is the most common error, and stating it in words prevents it.
Luego traduce a símbolos.
2. Cancel the shapes that appear on both sides · Cancela las figuras que aparecen en ambos lados
Two triangles sit on the left and four on the right. Cross off two from each side and the picture simplifies to one box against two triangles — still leaning right.
This is exactly the “subtract the same thing from both sides” move from equations. Removing equal weights from both pans cannot change which side is heavier.
3. Level means equals · Nivelada significa igual
If a choice says the two sides are equal, check whether the beam in the picture is level. A tilted beam rules out every equals statement immediately, without any counting.
That single check eliminates one of the four options here before you have counted a single triangle.
4. Watch which way each statement is written · Cuidado con cómo se escribe cada afirmación
“One box is less than two triangles” and “four triangles are less than one box” put the subject in different places. Read each choice slowly and ask: which thing is being called the smaller one?
Test writers rely on students matching keywords like “less than” without checking what comes before and after it.
5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante
Ask three questions in order: “Which side went down? So which side is heavier? What is on each side?” The student answers the inequality themselves without ever hearing the word inequality.
Then have them physically cross out two triangles on each side of the drawing with a pencil. When only a box and two triangles remain and the beam still leans right, the conclusion reads itself off the page — and the student has just performed “subtract 2t from both sides” without the symbols.
6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo
Balance questions are quick: note the low side, count each side, cancel what matches, read the result. No arithmetic is needed at all — it is counting and comparing.
Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each. Spend the first five seconds identifying which side is down; getting that backwards costs the whole question no matter how carefully you count.

Luego dibújala nivelada y escribe esa (b = 3t). Mismas figuras, distinta inclinación, distinta conclusión.
