Writing · Lesson 45
Possessive Apostrophes
Who owns what · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)
The problem · Select the part of the sentence that is incorrect
The incorrect part is worlds. It should be world’s.
The population belongs to the world, and ownership in English is marked with an apostrophe. Written as worlds, with no apostrophe, the word is just a plain plural — more than one world — which is not what the sentence means at all.
La parte incorrecta es worlds. Debería ser world’s.
La población pertenece al mundo, y la posesión en inglés se marca con apóstrofo. Escrito worlds, sin apóstrofo, es solo un plural — más de un mundo — que no es lo que dice la oración.
La prueba del “of”. Si puedes reescribir la frase con of the, es posesiva y necesita apóstrofo. “Half the world’s population” es “half the population of the world” — así que el apóstrofo entra.
The corrected sentence
Plural, or possessive?
| What you mean | How to write it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| More than one (just a plural) | Add s, no apostrophe | two worlds · many students |
| One owner | Add ’s | the world’s population · a student’s book |
| Several owners, word already ends in s | Add just an ’ | the students’ books · both brothers’ cars |
| Several owners, irregular plural | Add ’s | the children’s toys · the women’s team |
The whole system turns on one question: is the word simply naming more than one thing, or is it saying that something belongs to it? Plural gets no apostrophe. Ownership gets one.
Where the apostrophe lands tells you how many owners there are. The student’s books is one student; the students’ books is a whole class. Same letters, different meaning, decided entirely by that one mark.
Todo el sistema gira sobre una pregunta: ¿la palabra solo nombra más de una cosa, o dice que algo le pertenece? El plural no lleva apóstrofo. La posesión sí.
Dónde cae el apóstrofo te dice cuántos dueños hay. The student’s books es un estudiante; the students’ books es todo un grupo. Las mismas letras, distinto significado, decidido por esa sola marca.
Checking all four underlined parts
| Part | What it is doing | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| are | Agrees with the plural subject “telephone lines” | Correct |
| almost | Adverb describing “half” — how much of the population | Correct |
| worlds | Needs to show that the population belongs to the world | Incorrect → world’s |
| made | Past participle after “has never” | Correct |
This sentence quietly tests three different skills at once. are is subject–verb agreement, almost is an adverb, made is a participle, and only the fourth is about punctuation. You cannot know which one is wrong until you have checked each against its own job.
An apostrophe error is easy to read straight past, because the word is spelled correctly and sounds correct out loud. Worlds and world’s are pronounced identically — reading aloud will not catch this one.
Esta oración prueba tres destrezas distintas a la vez. are es concordancia sujeto–verbo, almost es un adverbio, made es un participio, y solo la cuarta es de puntuación. No puedes saber cuál está mal hasta revisar cada una según su propia función.
Un error de apóstrofo es fácil de pasar por alto, porque la palabra está bien escrita y suena bien en voz alta. Worlds y world’s se pronuncian igual — leer en voz alta no atrapa este.
How to work the sentence
Step 1 Find any noun ending in s among the underlined parts. worlds Step 2 Ask: does something belong to it? the population belongs to the world yes Step 3 Confirm with the "of" test. half the world's population = half the population OF THE world ✓ Step 4 One owner, so apostrophe before the s. worlds → world's
The one that is backwards: its and it’s
| Word | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| its | Belonging to it — possessive, no apostrophe | The dog wagged its tail. |
| it’s | Short for it is or it has | It’s raining. · It’s been a long day. |
This single pair breaks the rule you just learned, and it is the most common apostrophe error in English. Possessive pronouns — its, his, hers, ours, yours, theirs — never take an apostrophe.
The test that always works: read the sentence with it is in place. “The dog wagged it is tail” is nonsense, so it must be its. “It is raining” makes sense, so that one is it’s.
Este solo par rompe la regla que acabas de aprender, y es el error de apóstrofo más común del inglés. Los pronombres posesivos — its, his, hers, ours, yours, theirs — nunca llevan apóstrofo.
La prueba que siempre funciona: lee la oración poniendo it is. “The dog wagged it is tail” no tiene sentido, así que es its. “It is raining” sí tiene sentido, así que esa lleva it’s.
Helping a student with this
Spanish has no possessive apostrophe at all — it uses de: la población del mundo. That is a real advantage here, because a Spanish-speaking student is already thinking in the “of the” structure that this test depends on.
So teach it as a translation: whenever the Spanish version would use de, the English version needs an apostrophe. El libro del estudiante → the student’s book. The grammar they already have does the work; only the mark is new.
El español no tiene apóstrofo posesivo — usa de: la población del mundo. Eso es una ventaja real aquí, porque un estudiante hispanohablante ya piensa en la estructura de “of the” de la que depende este examen.
Así que enséñalo como traducción: cuando la versión en español usaría de, la inglesa necesita apóstrofo. El libro del estudiante → the student’s book. La gramática que ya tiene hace el trabajo; lo único nuevo es la marca.

Apostrophe strategy · Estrategia del apóstrofo
1. Use the “of the” test · Usa la prueba de “of the”
Rewrite the phrase with of the. “The world’s population” becomes “the population of the world” — it works, so the apostrophe belongs there.
Try it on a plain plural and it fails: “two worlds” cannot become “two of the world.” That failure is your signal to leave the apostrophe out.
Reescribe la frase con of the. “The world’s population” se vuelve “the population of the world” — funciona, así que el apóstrofo pertenece ahí.
Pruébalo con un plural simple y falla: “two worlds” no puede volverse “two of the world”. Ese fracaso es tu señal para dejar el apóstrofo fuera.
2. Translate it into Spanish with de · Tradúcelo al español con de
Spanish has no possessive apostrophe; it says la población del mundo, el libro del estudiante. Whenever the Spanish needs de or del, the English needs an apostrophe.
This is faster than any English rule, because you are checking meaning rather than memorizing punctuation. If no de appears in your Spanish version, no apostrophe appears in the English.
El español no tiene apóstrofo posesivo; dice la población del mundo, el libro del estudiante. Cuando el español necesita de o del, el inglés necesita apóstrofo.
Esto es más rápido que cualquier regla en inglés, porque revisas el significado en vez de memorizar puntuación. Si no aparece de en tu versión en español, no aparece apóstrofo en la inglesa.
3. Count the owners to place the mark · Cuenta los dueños para colocar la marca
One owner: apostrophe, then s. The student’s book — one student. Several owners whose word already ends in s: apostrophe after the s. The students’ books — a whole class.
Irregular plurals like children, women, and men do not end in s, so they go back to ’s: the children’s toys.
Un dueño: apóstrofo y luego s. The student’s book — un estudiante. Varios dueños cuya palabra ya termina en s: apóstrofo después de la s. The students’ books — todo un grupo.
Los plurales irregulares como children, women y men no terminan en s, así que vuelven a ’s: the children’s toys.
4. Never apostrophize a possessive pronoun · Nunca pongas apóstrofo a un pronombre posesivo
its, his, hers, ours, yours, theirs — none of these ever take an apostrophe. It’s with an apostrophe always means it is or it has, never ownership.
When you see it’s on this test, read the sentence with it is substituted in. If that version is nonsense, the apostrophe is the error.
its, his, hers, ours, yours, theirs — ninguno lleva apóstrofo jamás. It’s con apóstrofo siempre significa it is o it has, nunca posesión.
Cuando veas it’s en este examen, lee la oración sustituyendo it is. Si esa versión no tiene sentido, el apóstrofo es el error.
5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante
Ask one question: “Whose population is it?” The student answers “the world’s” without thinking — and they have just said the possessive out loud. Write down exactly what they said.
Then show the two versions side by side and ask what worlds with no apostrophe would mean. “More than one world” is obviously wrong for this sentence, and seeing why a wrong answer is wrong teaches more than being handed the right one.
Haz una sola pregunta: “¿De quién es la población?” El estudiante responde “del mundo” sin pensar — y acaba de decir el posesivo en voz alta. Escribe exactamente lo que dijo.
Luego muestra las dos versiones lado a lado y pregunta qué significaría worlds sin apóstrofo. “Más de un mundo” es obviamente incorrecto para esta oración, y ver por qué una respuesta está mal enseña más que recibir la correcta.
6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo
Scan the underlined parts for any noun ending in s. If one is there, run the “of the” test on it immediately — apostrophe errors are common and take about five seconds to confirm.
Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each. Reading aloud will not catch this error, since the two spellings sound identical, so check the apostrophe with your eyes rather than your ear.
Revisa las partes subrayadas buscando un sustantivo terminado en s. Si hay uno, aplícale de inmediato la prueba de “of the” — los errores de apóstrofo son comunes y toman unos cinco segundos en confirmarse.
Ocho preguntas en diez minutos son 75 segundos cada una. Leer en voz alta no atrapa este error, porque las dos grafías suenan igual, así que revisa el apóstrofo con los ojos y no con el oído.
