Area and Perimeter

Choosing the right formula · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)

The problem

A student is assigned to find the area of Mrs. Brown's classroom, shown above.
Which of the following would correctly determine the area?
English

Area is the space inside — the floor itself, the part you would cover with carpet. For any rectangle, that is Length × Width.

The other three choices all describe the distance around the room, or something bigger than the room entirely.

AREA — the space inside
A = Length × Width
Measured in square units: sq ft, ft², m². Think carpet, paint, tile.
PERIMETER — the distance around
P = 2(Length) + 2(Width)
Measured in plain units: ft, m. Think fence, trim, border, framing.

Why area is multiplication

English

Fill the floor with 1-foot squares. A room 5 feet long and 3 feet wide holds 3 rows of 5 squares — and 3 rows of 5 is exactly what 5 × 3 means. That is 15 square feet.

Perimeter is a completely different question: walk around the edge and add the four sides. 5 + 3 + 5 + 3 = 16 feet. Same room, different measurement, different unit.

5 + 3 + 5 + 3 = 16 pies. El mismo cuarto, otra medida, otra unidad.

The units tell you which formula to use. If the answer should be in square feet, you multiply. If it should be in plain feet, you add. A question asking for square feet can only be answered by multiplying two lengths together.

What each wrong choice actually finds

ChoiceWhat it really gives you
(Length) × (Width)The area. Correct.
(Length) + (Width)Half the perimeter — just two of the four sides.
2(Length) × 2(Width)The area of a room with both sides doubled — four times too big.
2(Length) + 2(Width)The perimeter — correct formula, wrong question.
English

The last choice is the dangerous one. It is a real formula, correctly written — it just answers a question nobody asked. Reading the question for the word area is what separates it from the right answer.

And 2(L) × 2(W) is worth a moment: doubling both sides gives 4 × L × W, not twice the area. Double a room's dimensions and the floor space quadruples.

Worked out with numbers

A classroom 30 feet long and 20 feet wide:

  AREA        = 30 x 20  =  600 square feet     (carpet to buy)

  PERIMETER   = 30 + 20 + 30 + 20
              = 2(30) + 2(20)
              = 60 + 40 = 100 feet (baseboard to buy)
English

Notice how different the two numbers are: 600 and 100. They are not close, and they are not in the same units. If a question's answer choices are all in square feet, perimeter cannot be the answer.

Which one does the situation need?

The jobWhat you needWhy
Carpet or tile for the floorAreaYou are covering a surface
Paint for a wallAreaAlso covering a surface
Fence around a yardPerimeterYou are going around the edge
Trim or baseboard along the wallsPerimeterAround the edge again
Ribbon around a gift box lidPerimeterAround the edge
Wrapping paper to cover the lidAreaCovering the surface
English

One question sorts nearly every word problem: am I covering something, or going around it? Covering is area. Going around is perimeter.

Show / Mostrar:

1. Covering or going around? · ¿Cubrir o rodear?

English

Ask it before you look at any numbers. Carpet, paint, tile, sod, wrapping paper — you are covering, so multiply. Fence, trim, ribbon, edging, walking the block — you are going around, so add.

Circle the object in the problem and picture yourself doing the job. The picture answers the question faster than any formula list.

2. Let the units decide · Deja que las unidades decidan

English

Square feet, square meters, ft² — the word “square” means two lengths were multiplied. Plain feet or meters means lengths were added.

Look at the answer choices before solving. If they all end in “sq ft,” you already know the operation, and any choice you compute by adding is guaranteed wrong.

3. Don't forget the fourth side · No olvides el cuarto lado

English

A rectangle has four sides, not two. Perimeter is L + W + L + W, which is why the formula carries those 2s: 2L + 2W.

“Length plus width” is the most common perimeter error and it appears as an answer choice constantly. It is exactly half of the right answer — close enough to look reasonable, which is the point.

4. Check that the size makes sense · Revisa que el tamaño tenga sentido

English

For a room bigger than 1 by 1, the area is always a much larger number than the perimeter. A 30-by-20 room has an area of 600 and a perimeter of 100.

So if you were asked for area and got a small number, or asked for perimeter and got a huge one, you used the wrong formula. That check costs three seconds.

5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante

English

Use the classroom you are standing in. Walk the student around the edge counting floor tiles — that is perimeter. Then have them count the tiles covering the whole floor, row by row — that is area, and they will discover the rows-times-columns shortcut themselves rather than being handed a formula.

Keep the words physical: “fence around” and “carpet inside.” When a student picks 2L + 2W for an area question, don't correct the formula — ask “are we buying fence or carpet?” The formula was never the problem; the reading was.

6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo

English

These are twenty-second questions: read for area or perimeter, pick the formula, multiply or add. The only slow part is re-reading a word problem you rushed the first time.

Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each. Spend five of those seconds underlining the word that names what is being asked for — it is the whole question.

Try this next / Practica esto: for every measurement question you missed, write one word next to it — “cover” or “around” — before doing any arithmetic. If the word doesn't match the formula you used, that was the mistake.
