Comparing Decimals
Greater than, less than, and in between · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)
The problem
Give every number the same number of decimal places. Adding zeros on the end of a decimal never changes its value: 0.4 = 0.400, and 0.54 = 0.540.
Now they compare like whole numbers: is 405 between 400 and 540? Yes. So 0.405 is the answer.
| ones | tenths | hund. | thous. | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.4 → | 0 | . | 4 | 0 | 0 | the lower limit |
| 0.405 → | 0 | . | 4 | 0 | 5 | between ✓ |
| 0.045 → | 0 | . | 0 | 4 | 5 | no tenths at all |
| 0.55 → | 0 | . | 5 | 5 | 0 | past the upper limit |
| 0.04 → | 0 | . | 0 | 4 | 0 | no tenths at all |
| 0.54 → | 0 | . | 5 | 4 | 0 | the upper limit |
The four steps, every time
Both conditions, checked separately
| Choice | Greater than 0.400? | Less than 0.540? | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.405 | Yes | Yes | Correct |
| 0.045 | No — 045 < 400 | Yes | Fails the first test |
| 0.550 | Yes | No — 550 > 540 | Fails the second test |
| 0.040 | No — 040 < 400 | Yes | Fails the first test |
Notice that two of the wrong answers pass one test. A student who checks only “less than 0.54” will accept 0.045 and 0.04; a student who checks only “greater than 0.4” will accept 0.55.
Between always means two tests, and the answer must pass both.
Adding zeros changes nothing
0.4 = 0.40 = 0.400 = 0.4000 all the same value 4 tenths = 40 hundredths = 400 thousandths But zeros in FRONT of the digits matter enormously: 0.4 = 4 tenths = 0.400 0.04 = 4 hundredths = 0.040 ten times smaller 0.004 = 4 thousandths = 0.004 a hundred times smaller
A zero at the end is decoration. A zero at the start, right after the point, pushes every digit one place smaller.
That is the difference between 0.405 and 0.045 — the same three digits, but one has 4 tenths and the other has none. Reading the tenths column first catches it immediately.
Money makes it obvious
Read every decimal as dollars. Is 40.5 cents between 40 cents and 54 cents? Obviously. Is 4.5 cents? Obviously not.
Students who hesitate over 0.045 answer instantly when it becomes four and a half cents. The comparison was never the hard part — the notation was.
Lee cada decimal como dólares. ¿40.5 centavos está entre 40 y 54 centavos? Obviamente. ¿Y 4.5 centavos? Obviamente no.

1. Pad every number to the same length · Rellena todos a la misma longitud
Find the number with the most decimal places, then add zeros to all the others until they match. 0.4, 0.405, 0.55 becomes 0.400, 0.405, 0.550.
Once they are the same length, ignore the decimal point entirely and compare 400, 405 and 550 as whole numbers. The comparison stops being about decimals at all.
2. Read the tenths first · Lee primero los décimos
The leftmost digit after the point outranks everything to its right. 0.9 beats 0.89999 because 9 tenths beats 8 tenths, and nothing further right can make up the gap.
Only when the tenths tie do you look at the hundredths. This is the same left-to-right rule you already use for whole numbers — 500 beats 499 on the hundreds digit alone.
3. Longer is not larger · Más largo no es más grande
With whole numbers, more digits does mean bigger — 1,000 beats 999. With decimals it does not. 0.5 is larger than 0.4999, even though the second one has more digits.
This is the misconception that produces most decimal errors, and it survives well into adulthood. Padding with zeros defeats it, because then every number has the same number of digits and the trap disappears.
4. “Between” means two tests · “Entre” significa dos pruebas
Write both conditions down: “bigger than 0.400” and “smaller than 0.540.” Then check each choice against both. A choice that passes one and fails the other is still wrong.
The answer choices are built so that each wrong one passes exactly one test. That is not an accident — it is the whole design of the question.
5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante
Turn every decimal into money and ask the same question. “Which is between forty cents and fifty-four cents?” The student who cannot rank 0.045 against 0.4 can rank four cents against forty instantly.
Then have them write the numbers in a place-value grid with zeros filled in. Seeing 0.400 and 0.045 stacked, with the tenths column lined up, does more than any rule you could state. When a student says the longer decimal is bigger, don't correct it — ask them to write both as money and say which they would rather have.
6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo
Padding four numbers with zeros takes about fifteen seconds and turns the question into whole-number comparison. That is the fastest reliable route, and it is faster than staring at the choices hoping one looks right.
Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each. Comparison questions should come in well under that.
| English | Español | Qué es |
|---|---|---|
| greater than (>) | mayor que | Más grande |
| less than (<) | menor que | Más pequeño |
| between | entre | Dos condiciones a la vez |
| equal to (=) | igual a | 0.5 = 0.50 |
