Dividing by a One-Digit Number

Long division · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)

The problem

5,058 ÷ 6 = ?

The three words you need

5,058 — dividendel dividendo — the number being divided
6 — divisorel divisor — the number you divide by
843 — quotientel cociente — the answer

The four steps, over and over

English

Long division is one small cycle repeated until you run out of digits:

1Divide — how many times does 6 fit?
2Multiply — that answer × 6
3Subtract — take it away to find what's left
4Bring down — carry the next digit and repeat

Worked out: 5,058 ÷ 6

StepWhat you askWhat happens
1Does 6 fit into 5?No — so use the first two digits: 50
2How many 6s in 50?8 (6×8=48). Write 8. Left over: 2
3Bring down the 5 → 254 (6×4=24). Write 4. Left over: 1
4Bring down the 8 → 183 (6×3=18). Write 3. Left over: 0

Three checks that catch almost every mistake

Check 1 · Estimate first · Estima primero

English

6 × 800 = 4,800 and 6 × 900 = 5,400. Since 5,058 sits between them, the answer must be between 800 and 900.

That single line eliminates 743 and 729 before you calculate anything.

Español

6 × 800 = 4.800 y 6 × 900 = 5.400.

Check 2 · Look at the last digit · Mira el último dígito

English

The dividend ends in 8. So the quotient's last digit, times 6, must end in 8.

  • 3 × 6 = 18  ✓  (843 survives)
  • 9 × 6 = 54  ✗  (829 is out)

Two checks, three wrong answers gone — without long division at all.

Check 3 · Multiply back · Multiplica al revés

English

Division and multiplication undo each other. If 5,058 ÷ 6 = 843, then 843 × 6 must equal 5,058.

843 × 6 = 5,058 ✓ — the answer is confirmed. On a timed test this takes ten seconds and removes all doubt.

The trap to remember / La trampa que debes recordar: when the divisor does not fit into a digit, you must write a 0 in the quotient and keep going. Forgetting that zero turns 309 into 39 and 601 into 61 — the single most common division error on tests.

Show / Mostrar:

1. Never lose the zero · Nunca pierdas el cero

English

In 1,236 ÷ 4: four goes into 12 three times, then into 3 zero times, then into 36 nine times → 309.

Students who skip the middle zero write 39 — and 39 is usually sitting right there as an answer choice. Every digit you bring down must produce a digit in the answer, even if that digit is 0.

2. Count the digits in the answer · Cuenta los dígitos de la respuesta

English

Before dividing, ask how big the answer should be. 8,136 ÷ 6: since 6 × 1,000 = 6,000 and 8,136 is bigger, the quotient must have four digits — so 356 cannot be right.

Answer choices with the wrong number of digits are free eliminations.

3. Know your multiplication facts cold · Domina las tablas

English

Long division is really a multiplication test in disguise. Every step asks “how many 7s in 42?” If the facts are automatic, division is fast; if they aren't, every problem takes three times as long.

Weakest tables for most students: 6, 7, 8. Drill those three and division speeds up immediately.

4. Use the answer choices as a shortcut · Usa las opciones como atajo

English

On a multiple-choice test you don't have to divide — you can multiply. Take a choice, multiply it by the divisor, and see whether you land on the dividend.

Start with the middle-sized choice: if the product is too small, you know to go up; too big, go down. Two multiplications usually settle it.

5. Keep your columns straight · Mantén las columnas alineadas

English

Most division errors are not math errors — they're handwriting errors. A digit written half a column off turns 756 into 705.

Use graph paper, or turn lined paper sideways so the lines become columns. It sounds trivial; it removes a whole category of mistakes.

6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo

English

Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each. If one problem passes 90 seconds, mark it, move on, and come back — an easy question later is worth exactly as much as the hard one you're stuck on.

Practice with the clock visible. Speed under pressure is a separate skill from knowing how to divide.
