Finding the Median
Sort first, then take the middle · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)
The student's work
Problem: Find the median of the numbers in the list
10, 70, 40, 10, 30.
Student's solution: 40
The correct procedure is: arrange the numbers from least to greatest and choose the number in the middle. Sorted, the list is 10, 10, 30, 40, 70 — and the middle number is 30.
The student answered 40 because 40 sits in the third position of the list as written. They took the middle of the line on the page instead of the middle of the sorted values. Only one step was skipped: the sorting.
Worked out
List: 10, 70, 40, 10, 30 Step 1 — sort from least to greatest: 10, 10, 30, 40, 70 Step 2 — find the middle position: 5 numbers, so the 3rd one is the middle two below it, two above it Median = 30 The student's 40 was the 3rd number of the UNSORTED list — the right position, wrong list.
Each wrong choice is a real statistic
| Procedure | What it finds | For this list |
|---|---|---|
| Add the numbers and divide by 5 | The mean (average) | 160 ÷ 5 = 32 |
| Subtract the lowest from the highest | The range | 70 − 10 = 60 |
| Choose the number that occurs most often | The mode | 10 |
| Arrange least to greatest, choose the middle | The median | 30 — correct |
None of the wrong answers is nonsense. Each one is a correct procedure for a different measure, which is exactly why they are tempting — a student who mixes up the four words will confidently run the wrong one.
This same list gives four different answers depending on which word the question used: 32, 60, 10, or 30. The word in the question is doing all the work.
The four words
Two memory hooks that hold up: median is the strip down the middle of a highway, and mode is what is in fashion — what shows up most.
In Spanish the trap is sharper, because media (mean) and mediana (median) are one syllable apart. Say both words out loud together when teaching, so the difference gets heard, not just read.
When the list has an even count
List: 4, 8, 10, 14 (4 numbers — no single middle) Two middle numbers: 8 and 10 Add them and halve: (8 + 10) ÷ 2 = 18 ÷ 2 = 9 Median = 9 — and notice 9 is not even in the list.
With an even count there is no single middle value, so you take the two in the center and average them. The median can be a number that never appears in the data, and that is perfectly normal.
Still sort first. Everything about the median depends on the list being in order before you count in from the ends.
Correcting the work as a paraprofessional
The student's answer is not random, and saying “that's wrong, it's 30” teaches nothing. Show them their own 40 sitting in the middle of the unsorted line, then have them rewrite the list in order and look again.
Give the procedure as two numbered steps they can say back: one, put them in order. Two, take the middle. A student who can recite those two steps never needs to remember a formula.

1. Rewrite the list in order, every time · Reescribe la lista en orden, siempre
Do not sort in your head and do not sort by pointing. Physically write the sorted list on a second line, then work from that line only.
This one habit removes the exact error in the item above. A student who writes 10, 10, 30, 40, 70 on paper cannot accidentally answer 40 — the middle is right there in front of them.
2. Cross off from both ends · Tacha desde los dos extremos
Once sorted, cross off the smallest and the largest together. Then the next pair. Keep going until one number is left — that is the median.
This works no matter how long the list is, and it never requires counting or dividing. If two numbers are left instead of one, the list had an even count: average those two.
3. Keep repeated numbers · Conserva los números repetidos
The list 10, 70, 40, 10, 30 has two 10s and both stay in the sorted list. Dropping the duplicate leaves four numbers, shifts the middle, and changes the answer.
A repeated value is a real data point, not a typo. Five numbers went in, so five numbers come out.
4. Circle the word before you compute · Encierra la palabra antes de calcular
Median, mean, mode, range — four words, four procedures, four different answers from the same list. Circle the one the question actually used before touching a number.
For 10, 70, 40, 10, 30 the answers are 30, 32, 10, and 60. Getting the arithmetic right on the wrong word still scores zero.
5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante
Line students up by height and ask who is in the middle. Then scramble them and ask again — the person in the middle changed, but nobody grew. That is the whole lesson: the middle only means something once things are in order.
When a student gives the unsorted middle, name what they did right first: “you found the middle — good. Now let's put them in order and find the middle again.” They keep the half of the procedure they had, and add the half they missed.
6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo
Median questions are quick once the list is sorted, and sorting five numbers takes about ten seconds. Do not skip it to save time — that is where the whole question is won or lost.
Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each. Spend the first ten on sorting and the rest is almost free.
| English | Español | Qué es |
|---|---|---|
| range | rango | Mayor menos menor |
| arrange / order | ordenar | El paso 1, siempre |
| middle | medio / centro | La posición central |
