The problem

English

Answer two small questions and the problem is done.

1. How big is the fraction? In 1517 the top is smaller than the bottom, so the value is less than 1. It is 15 of the 17 pieces that make one whole — almost a whole, but not quite.

2. Which side of zero? The minus sign puts it to the left of zero. So it lands between −1 and 0, just to the right of −1.

Top smaller than bottom → between 0 and 1. That is true for 12, 34, 1517 and 99100 alike. Add a minus sign and it lands between −1 and 0. The size of the numbers does not matter — only which one is bigger.

Three kinds of fraction

Proper — top < bottompropia — 1517, 34. Value between 0 and 1.
Improper — top > bottomimpropia — 1715, 53. Value more than 1.
Mixed numbernúmero mixto — 238. Sits between 2 and 3.
English

A mixed number is the easiest of all: the whole number tells you which two integers it sits between. 238 is between 2 and 3, and −238 is between −3 and −2.

An improper fraction becomes just as easy once you divide: 53 is 5 ÷ 3 = 1 remainder 2, so 123 — between 1 and 2.

Why each wrong answer is tempting

ChoiceWhat would have to be true
−2 and −1The fraction would have to be bigger than 1 — something like −1715. But 15 is less than 17.
−1 and 0Correct. A proper fraction with a minus sign.
0 and 1This is where +1517 would go. The minus sign was dropped.
1 and 2Both errors at once — the sign ignored and the fraction treated as greater than 1.

The mirror trick for negatives

English

Find the positive fraction first, then flip it across zero. 1517 sits between 0 and 1, near the 1. Its mirror image sits between −1 and 0, near the −1.

Careful with one thing: on the negative side, the bigger the fraction, the farther left it goes, so the smaller the number is. −117 sits close to zero; −1517 sits far from zero, close to −1. That reversal is what makes negative fractions feel strange.

Comparing two negatives

English

On a number line, right is always greater. So −14 is greater than −34, because it sits closer to zero.

This trips up students who read the fractions and think “3 quarters is more than 1 quarter.” It is — but with minus signs, more of a negative means further from zero, which means smaller. Owing $3 is worse than owing $1.

How close to the landmark?

15/17  =  15 out of 17 pieces      almost the whole  ->  near 1
 1/17  =   1 out of 17 pieces      barely any        ->  near 0
9/17 = 9 out of 17 pieces just over half -> near the middle

Add a minus sign and each one mirrors:

-15/17 -> near -1      -1/17 -> near 0      -9/17 -> near -1/2
English

Compare the top number to half the bottom. Half of 17 is 8.5, and 15 is far above it — so 1517 is well past half, closer to 1 than to 0.

Show / Mostrar:

1. Compare top to bottom first · Compara arriba con abajo primero

English

Top smaller than bottom means the value is under 1. Top bigger means over 1. Top equal to bottom means exactly 1. That one glance decides which pair of whole numbers the point falls between.

It works no matter how ugly the numbers are. 1517, 9899 and 23 all live between 0 and 1 for the same reason.

Español

Arriba menor que abajo significa valor menor que 1. Arriba mayor significa más de 1. Iguales significa exactamente 1.

2. Handle the sign separately · Trata el signo aparte

English

Cover the minus sign with your finger, place the positive fraction, then move to the mirror position on the left of zero. Two easy steps instead of one confusing one.

Every answer choice on this kind of question comes in pairs — “−1 and 0” against “0 and 1” — precisely because dropping the sign is the expected mistake.

3. Turn improper fractions into mixed numbers · Convierte las impropias

English

Divide the top by the bottom. 125 is 12 ÷ 5 = 2 remainder 2, so 225 — between 2 and 3. Now the whole number tells you the answer directly.

With a minus sign the same digits apply on the left: −125 is between −3 and −2. Note the order — the smaller number comes first when you name a negative interval.

4. Right is greater, always · La derecha siempre es mayor

English

When comparing any two numbers, the one further right on the line is greater. That single rule handles positives, negatives, fractions and decimals without any special cases.

So −14 > −34, and 0 is greater than every negative number there is. Draw the line if you have to — it takes five seconds and settles the question.

5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante

English

Draw the segment from −1 to 0 large, and chop it into the number of pieces in the denominator. For seventeenths, seventeen tick marks — the drawing itself teaches that all of them fit between two whole numbers.

For the sign, use temperature or money. “Almost one whole dollar in debt” is a picture a student can hold; “−15/17” is not. Once they see the debt is nearly a dollar but not quite, they will place it themselves — just short of −1.

6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo

English

These are among the fastest questions on a math section — two comparisons and no computation. Fifteen seconds each is realistic once the routine is automatic.

Don't convert to decimals unless you must. 15 ÷ 17 on paper wastes thirty seconds to tell you what “top is smaller than bottom” already told you for free.
