Inches to Feet

Converting units with a fraction left over · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)

Show / Mostrar:

The problem

The length of a guinea pig cage is 27 inches.
What is the cage's length in feet?
English

There are 12 inches in 1 foot. Divide: 27 ÷ 12 = 2 with 3 left over.

Two whole feet, and 3 inches remaining. Those 3 inches are 3 out of the 12 inches in a foot — that is 312, which reduces to 14. The answer is 214 feet.

Español

Hay 12 pulgadas en 1 pie. Divide: 27 ÷ 12 = 2 y sobran 3.

Worked out

27 inches, and 12 inches make 1 foot

        2 R 3
     ________
  12 ) 27 12 x 2 = 24, and 27 - 24 = 3
      -24
      ----
        3 3 inches left over

The remainder goes OVER 12: 3/12
Reduce it (divide top and bottom by 3): 1/4

27 inches = 2 1/4 feet
The remainder always goes over 12 — not over the remainder, not over 10. The bottom number of the fraction is always how many small units make one big unit. Inches to feet: 12. Ounces to pounds: 16. Minutes to hours: 60.

Pulgadas a pies: 12. Onzas a libras: 16. Minutos a horas: 60.

Why each wrong answer is tempting

ChoiceWhere it comes from
214 ftCorrect. 3 inches left over = 312 = 14 of a foot.
213 ftPutting the 3 in the denominator instead of dividing by 12. That would be 4 inches, not 3.
212 ftGuessing that “a few inches left” means half a foot. Half a foot is 6 inches.
234 ftWriting the remainder 3 over 4 instead of over 12. 34 of a foot is 9 inches.

Five pairs. Learn them and most inch-to-foot questions become instant — you divide once, then recognize the leftover instead of reducing a fraction under time pressure.

Español

Cinco pares.

Which way: multiply or divide?

Small → big: divideinches to feet, minutes to hours, ounces to pounds. The number gets smaller.
Big → small: multiplyfeet to inches, hours to minutes, pounds to ounces. The number gets bigger.
English

Ask one question before you calculate: should my answer be bigger or smaller than what I started with?

27 inches becomes a small number of feet, because a foot is a big unit — it takes fewer of them. So 27 inches cannot be 324 feet. That check catches the multiply/divide mix-up, which is the single most common conversion error.

Check by converting back

English

214 feet × 12 = 2 × 12 + 14 of 12 = 24 + 3 = 27 inches. ✓

Ten seconds, and the answer is confirmed. On a multiple-choice test you can run this check on the choices themselves: 13 of 12 is 4, 12 of 12 is 6, 34 of 12 is 9 — none of those give 27 inches.

Español

214 pies × 12 = 2 × 12 + 14 de 12 = 24 + 3 = 27 pulgadas. ✓

Show / Mostrar:

1. Write the conversion fact first · Escribe primero el dato de conversión

English

Before touching the numbers in the problem, write “12 in = 1 ft” on your paper. Everything else follows from that one line, and having it written down stops you from dividing by 10 out of habit.

If the problem uses a unit you're unsure about, the conversion fact is often printed on the test's formula sheet — check there before guessing.

2. Bigger or smaller? · ¿Más grande o más pequeño?

English

Going to a bigger unit (inches → feet) means fewer of them, so the number shrinks and you divide. Going to a smaller unit (feet → inches) means more of them, so the number grows and you multiply.

Estimate before you calculate: 27 inches is a bit more than two rulers, so the answer is a bit more than 2 feet. Any choice near 300 or near 0.2 is wrong before you do the arithmetic.

3. The leftover is a fraction, not a decimal · Lo que sobra es una fracción, no un decimal

English

27 ÷ 12 = 2 remainder 3, and the remainder becomes 312 of a foot. Students who reach for a calculator get 2.25 and then have to turn that back into 14 anyway.

Remainder over the divisor, then reduce. That's the whole move, and it works for every unit: 100 minutes is 1 hour and 40 minutes, or 14060 = 123 hours.

4. Always reduce the fraction · Siempre reduce la fracción

English

2312 is a correct value, but it will not be printed as a choice — answers on tests are always in lowest terms.

If your answer isn't among the choices, don't panic and don't redo the division. Reduce what you have first. That step alone rescues a large share of “my answer isn't there” moments.

5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante

English

Put a real ruler on the table. Have the student lay it end over end to measure 27 inches: one ruler, two rulers, and then a piece left over. Ask “how much of a ruler is that piece?” The fraction stops being a rule and becomes a picture.

Then ask them to point to the 3-inch mark and say what fraction of the ruler it is. A student who can see that 3 inches is a quarter of the ruler will never write 13 again.

6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo

English

A conversion question is one division and one fraction — under a minute once the five inch-fractions are memorized. If one is taking longer, you are probably converting in the wrong direction; check whether your answer should be bigger or smaller and start over from that.

Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each. Conversions should finish under that and leave you time for the word problems.
