Inequality Symbols

The problem

8 > 5

Which of the following is true? — and why is this the one?

The five symbols

SymbolRead it asEn españolTrue example
>is greater thanes mayor que8 > 5
<is less thanes menor que5 < 8
is greater than or equal toes mayor o igual que8 ≥ 8
is less than or equal toes menor o igual que5 ≤ 8
is not equal tono es igual a8 ≠ 5

Step 1 · The pointy end aims at the smaller number

   8 > 5 5 < 8
   | | | |
 big small small big

The WIDE opening always faces the BIGGER number.
The POINT always aims at the SMALLER number.
English

Think of the symbol as an open mouth that always eats the bigger number. In 8 > 5 the mouth opens toward the 8, so the statement says 8 is bigger — which is true.

In 8 < 5 the mouth opens toward the 5, claiming 5 is bigger. That is false, so that choice is out.

Step 2 · Always read from left to right

English

Read the sentence out loud in order: “eight is greater than five.” True or false? True.

Do the same with every choice and the answer picks itself:

  • 8 < 5 → “eight is less than five” — false
  • 8 ≤ 5 → “eight is less than or equal to five” — false both ways
  • 8 > 5 → “eight is greater than five” — TRUE
  • 8 = 5 → “eight equals five” — false

Step 3 · The line underneath means “or equal”

English

The little bar under ≤ and ≥ adds a second chance. The whole statement is true if either part is true.

  • 6 ≤ 6 — the “less than” part fails, but the “equal” part works → true
  • 8 ≤ 5 — 8 is not less than 5, and 8 does not equal 5 → false

This is why 8 ≤ 5 is a good trap: it looks softer than 8 < 5, but adding “or equal” doesn't rescue a false statement.

Step 4 · The number line settles every case

  <---|----|----|----|----|----|----|----|----|--->
      0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

  5 is to the LEFT of 8   ->   5 < 8
  8 is to the RIGHT of 5  ->   8 > 5
Words that become symbols / Palabras que se vuelven símbolos:
“more than” = más que → >  ·  “less than” = menos que → <  ·  “at least” = por lo menos →  ·  “at most” = como máximo →  ·  “no more than” = no más de →  ·  “no less than” = no menos de →

Inequality strategy · Estrategia con desigualdades

Show / Mostrar:

1. Say it out loud, in order · Dilo en voz alta, en orden

English

Symbols are silent, and silence is where mistakes hide. Convert every inequality into a sentence and judge the sentence, not the picture.

“Eight is greater than five.” Your ear knows immediately whether that's true. Your eye, scanning four similar symbols, does not.

Tu ojo, mirando cuatro símbolos parecidos, no.

2. The point aims at the small number · La punta apunta al pequeño

English

Whatever memory trick you use — the alligator eats the bigger number, the symbol is an arrow pointing down at the smaller one — pick one and use it every time.

Students who switch between tricks get confused under time pressure. One trick, used automatically, beats three tricks half-remembered.

3. “Or equal” gives two ways to be true · “O igual” da dos maneras

English

For ≤ and ≥, ask two questions and accept either yes:

  • 7 ≤ 7 → Is 7 less than 7? No. Is 7 equal to 7? Yes → true
  • 7 < 7 → Is 7 less than 7? No. That's the only question → false

The pair 12 ≤ 12 and 12 < 12 looks nearly identical and only one is true. Slow down whenever the two numbers are the same.

4. Translate the English words · Traduce las palabras

English

Word problems hide the symbol inside a phrase. These four are worth memorizing because tests use them constantly:

  • at least 48 → 48 or more → ≥ 48
  • at most 48 → 48 or fewer → ≤ 48
  • more than 48 → 49 and up → > 48
  • fewer than 48 → 47 and down → < 48

The difference between at least and more than is whether 48 itself counts. That single word decides the symbol.

  • at most 48 = como máximo 48 → ≤ 48
  • more than 48 = más de 48 → > 48
  • fewer than 48 = menos de 48 → < 48

La diferencia entre at least y more than es si el 48 mismo cuenta. Esa sola palabra decide el símbolo.

5. Watch for “NOT true” questions · Cuidado con “NOT true”

English

Some questions ask which statement is false. Then three choices are true and you're hunting the one that isn't — the opposite of your normal instinct.

Circle the words not, false, and except the moment you see them. Missing that one word turns a question you understand into a question you get wrong.

6. Draw the number line when stuck · Dibuja la recta numérica

English

Every inequality is a question about position: whichever number sits farther right on the number line is the greater one.

This matters most with negatives, where intuition betrays you: −8 sits to the left of −5, so −8 < −5. Bigger digits do not mean bigger numbers once you cross zero.

Try this next / Practica esto: write five pairs of numbers and place the correct symbol between them, then read each one aloud as a full sentence. If the sentence sounds true, the symbol is right. Include one pair of equal numbers and one pair of negatives — those are the two that trip people up.
