1ExcellentExcelente, magnífico“What a capital idea!” (uso británico antiguo)
2Of or relating to financial assetsRelativo al capital, al dinero“capital investment” = inversión de capital
3First and foremost; principalPrincipal, primordial“of capital importance” = de capital importancia
4Relating to or being a seat of governmentRelativo a la sede del gobierno“the capital city” = la ciudad capital
La respuesta es la definición 3. Prueba la sustitución: “era de principal importancia para la educación” — funciona. Las otras no: “de excelente importancia”, “de importancia financiera”, “de importancia gubernamental” no dicen lo que dice la oración.

Multiple-meaning words · Palabras con varios significados

Show / Mostrar:

1. Substitute, then listen · Sustituye y escucha

English

This is the whole technique: put each definition into the sentence and read it aloud.

  • “of excellent importance” — nobody says that
  • “of financial importance” — possible English, but the topic is a curriculum, not money
  • “of first and foremost importance” — yes, that's the idea
  • “of government-seat importance” — meaningless

The one that sounds natural and fits the topic is your answer.

Español

Esta es toda la técnica: mete cada definición en la oración y léela en voz alta.

  • “de excelente importancia” — nadie dice eso
  • “de importancia financiera” — posible, pero el tema es un plan de estudios, no dinero
  • “de principal importancia” — sí, esa es la idea
  • “de importancia de sede de gobierno” — no significa nada

La que suena natural y encaja con el tema es tu respuesta.

2. The most famous meaning is usually the trap · El significado más famoso suele ser la trampa

English

Most students learn “capital” first as a capital city. That's definition 4 — and it's wrong here. Test writers choose words precisely because the everyday meaning doesn't fit.

When you recognize a word instantly, slow down. That feeling of “I know this one” is exactly what the question is testing.

Español

Casi todos aprenden “capital” primero como ciudad capital. Esa es la definición 4 — y aquí está mal. Los examinadores eligen palabras justamente porque el significado cotidiano no encaja.

Cuando reconoces una palabra al instante, ve más despacio. Esa sensación de “esta me la sé” es exactamente lo que la pregunta está midiendo.

3. Let the neighboring word decide · Deja que decida la palabra vecina

English

“Capital” is attached to importance. Ask what kind of importance makes sense: the board spent most of their time on the curriculum because it mattered more than anything else. That is “first and foremost.”

A word's meaning is decided by its neighbors far more than by its dictionary rank.

Español

“Capital” está pegada a importance (importancia). Pregúntate qué tipo de importancia tiene sentido: la junta dedicó la mayor parte del tiempo al plan de estudios porque importaba más que ninguna otra cosa. Eso es “first and foremost”.

El significado de una palabra lo deciden sus vecinas mucho más que su lugar en el diccionario.

4. Check the part of speech first · Revisa primero la categoría gramatical

English

The entry says (adj) — adjective. That means every definition here describes something. In the sentence, “capital” describes “importance,” so we're in the right entry.

Common abbreviations worth memorizing: n. noun, v. verb, adj. adjective, adv. adverb, prep. preposition. A real dictionary would also list capital (n) — a city, or money — in a separate entry.

Español

La entrada dice (adj) = adjetivo. Eso significa que todas estas definiciones describen algo. En la oración, “capital” describe a “importance”, así que estamos en la entrada correcta.

Abreviaturas que conviene memorizar: n. sustantivo, v. verbo, adj. adjetivo, adv. adverbio, prep. preposición. Un diccionario real tendría además capital (n) — ciudad o dinero — en otra entrada.

5. Definition 1 is not the “main” one · La definición 1 no es la “principal”

English

Numbers in a dictionary are labels, not rankings of correctness. Definition 1 is not more right than definition 3 — it is simply listed first, often because it is oldest or most common overall.

Never pick a definition because it comes first. Pick it because it works in this sentence.

Español

Los números del diccionario son etiquetas, no una clasificación de cuál es más correcta. La definición 1 no es más válida que la 3 — solo aparece primero, muchas veces por ser la más antigua o la más frecuente en general.

Nunca elijas una definición porque va primero. Elígela porque funciona en esta oración.

6. Use Spanish cognates — carefully · Usa los cognados, con cuidado

English

Spanish speakers have an advantage here: de capital importancia exists in Spanish with exactly this meaning. When an English phrase has a twin in your language, trust it.

But stay alert for false friends. In this same entry, English principal means main (Spanish principal) — not el director of a school, which is also called a principal in English. Same spelling, two different jobs.

Español

Los hispanohablantes tienen ventaja aquí: de capital importancia existe en español con exactamente este significado. Cuando una frase en inglés tiene gemela en tu idioma, confía en ella.

Pero cuidado con los falsos amigos. En esta misma entrada, el inglés principal significa principal, primordial — no el director de una escuela, que en inglés también se dice principal. Misma palabra, dos funciones distintas.

Try this next / Practica esto: write one sentence for each of the four definitions of “capital.” If you can build four sentences that couldn't swap places, you understand the word better than the dictionary showed you — and this question type will never cost you a point again.

Escribe una oración para cada una de las cuatro definiciones de “capital”. Si logras cuatro oraciones que no se puedan intercambiar, entiendes la palabra mejor de lo que te mostró el diccionario — y este tipo de pregunta no volverá a costarte un punto.
