Read the passage

In the 1970s, Chinese American performer Bruce Lee
collaborated with Hong Kong film studio Golden Harvest
to make five movies (among them Fists of Fury and
LineEnter the Dragon) that took traditional martial-arts
(5)themes and stylistic elements and recast them in
contemporary contexts. These films became some of the
most profitable ever made. In addition, Lee turned the
fledgling martial-arts movie into a major movie genre. It
is therefore no surprise that Lee came to represent an
(10)alternative action hero, one whose acrobatic performances
fired the imagination of audiences and filmmakers around
the world. Looking back on his films today, it seems to me
that Lee's athletic skills were almost superhuman.

Question 1 of 3

Purpose, vocabulary, and tone · Propósito, vocabulario y tono

Show / Mostrar:

1. Find the subject: the man or the movies? · ¿El hombre o el cine?

English

Two answer choices sound almost identical: “Lee's revitalization of the field of martial arts” and “Lee's effect on the martial-arts movie genre.” One word decides it.

Every sentence here is about films — a studio, five movies, profits, a movie genre, audiences and filmmakers. The passage never says Lee changed martial arts as a practice or a sport. Same topic area, wrong field.

Español

Dos opciones suenan casi iguales: “Lee's revitalization of the field of martial arts” (las artes marciales como disciplina) y “Lee's effect on the martial-arts movie genre” (el género de cine).

2. One title mentioned is not a discussion · Mencionar un título no es analizarlo

English

“Introduce Fists of Fury and discuss it in detail” fails on the words in detail. The film appears once, inside parentheses, as one example among five. Nothing about its plot, characters, or scenes ever follows.

When a choice promises detail, go looking for it. If it isn't on the page, the choice is dead.

Español

“Introduce Fists of Fury and discuss it in detail” falla en las palabras in detail (en detalle).

3. Contrast needs two sides · Contrastar exige dos lados

English

“Contrast Lee's skills with those of other martial-arts action heroes” requires other heroes to exist in the passage. Look: there are none. Lee is called an alternative action hero, but the passage never names or describes anyone to compare him against.

Same rule you've seen before: contrast and compare promise at least two things side by side.

Español

“Contrast Lee's skills with those of other martial-arts action heroes” exige que esos otros héroes existan en el pasaje.

4. Let the sentence teach you the hard word · Deja que la oración te enseñe la palabra difícil

English

You may not know fledgling. The sentence still gives it away: “Lee turned the fledgling martial-arts movie into a major movie genre.” Something turns into something bigger — so it started out small and new.

The literal meaning helps too: a fledgling is a baby bird just learning to fly. Small, young, not established yet.

Pequeño, joven, todavía no establecido.

5. Spot the moment the author steps in · Detecta cuándo entra el autor

English

The passage runs on facts — dates, a studio, five films, profits, a genre. Then the last sentence changes voice: “it seems to me that Lee's athletic skills were almost superhuman.”

“It seems to me” is the same signal as “I feel” or “I think,” and “superhuman” is a judgment nobody can measure. That single sentence is the only opinion in the passage.

Luego la última oración cambia de voz: “it seems to me that Lee's athletic skills were almost superhuman” (me parece que sus habilidades eran casi sobrehumanas).

6. One opinion at the end doesn't change the purpose · Una opinión final no cambia el propósito

English

Careful: noticing the opinion does not mean the passage's purpose is to give an opinion. Twelve lines describe what Lee did to a film genre; one line adds a personal note at the end.

Purpose follows the bulk of the text, not its last sentence. Ask which idea the whole passage serves — that's what “primary” means.

Try this next / Practica esto: mark each sentence F (fact) or O (opinion), then write the passage's purpose in one sentence starting with a verb. You should get four F's, one O, and something like “describes how Bruce Lee changed martial-arts movies.”
