Naming Figures
Triangles and polygons · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)
The problem
The figure has three sides, so it is a triangle. One of its angles measures 90°, so it is a right triangle.
That is the whole question. A right triangle is any triangle with one 90° angle — the other two angles can be anything, as long as they add up to the remaining 90°.
Why each wrong answer fails
| Choice | What it would need | What we have |
|---|---|---|
| Equilateral triangle | Three equal angles of 60° | 90°, 50°, 40° — all different |
| Right triangle | One 90° angle | The angle at B is 90°. Correct. |
| Hexagon | Six sides | Three sides |
| Rectangle | Four sides, four 90° angles | Three sides, one 90° angle |
Two ways to name a triangle
Every triangle has two names — one from its angles, one from its sides. A question will ask for one or the other, so know both lists.
| By angles | Rule | Por ángulos |
|---|---|---|
| Right | Exactly one angle = 90° | Rectángulo |
| Acute | All three angles under 90° | Acutángulo |
| Obtuse | One angle over 90° | Obtusángulo |
| By sides | Rule | Por lados |
|---|---|---|
| Equilateral | All 3 sides equal — and all angles 60° | Equilátero |
| Isosceles | Exactly 2 sides equal — 2 equal angles | Isósceles |
| Scalene | No sides equal — all angles different | Escaleno |
The 180° rule
The three angles of any triangle always add to 180°. In our figure: 90 + 50 + 40 = 180. ✓
This rule does two jobs on a test. It finds a missing angle — if two angles are 65° and 85°, the third is 180 − 150 = 30°. And it rejects impossible figures: no triangle can have angles of 90° and 95°, because those two alone are already 185°.
Polygons: the name is the number of sides
| Sides | Name | Nombre |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Triangle | Triángulo |
| 4 | Quadrilateral (square, rectangle…) | Cuadrilátero |
| 5 | Pentagon | Pentágono |
| 6 | Hexagon | Hexágono |
| 8 | Octagon | Octágono |

Geometry strategy · Estrategia de geometría
1. Count sides before you read the choices · Cuenta los lados antes de leer las opciones
Naming questions almost always include one or two choices with the wrong number of sides — a hexagon or a rectangle next to a triangle. Those are free eliminations that cost you two seconds.
Say the side count out loud before looking down: “three sides, so it's a triangle.” Now you are choosing between two names instead of four.
2. Find the biggest angle · Busca el ángulo más grande
One glance at the largest angle names the triangle: exactly 90° is right, more than 90° is obtuse, and if the biggest one is still under 90° the triangle is acute.
A triangle can have only one angle of 90° or more — two would already reach 180° with nothing left for the third. So the biggest angle decides it by itself.
3. Use 180° as a checking tool · Usa los 180° para revisar
Add the angles shown. If they total 180°, your reading of the figure is right. If they don't, you misread a number — or the question is testing whether you notice the set is impossible.
“Which could be the angles of a triangle?” is answered entirely by adding each choice: only the set that totals exactly 180 survives.
4. One figure can have several correct names · Una figura puede tener varios nombres correctos
A square is also a rectangle, a quadrilateral, and a polygon. An equilateral triangle is also acute and isosceles. All of those are true at once.
On a multiple-choice test this is not a trap — it is a shortcut. Only one of those names will be listed, so find the one that appears among the choices rather than arguing about which is “most correct.”
5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante
Have the student trace the figure with a finger and count out loud — “one, two, three sides.” Naming is a counting skill before it is a vocabulary skill, and counting out loud catches the student who guessed from the shape's overall look.
For the angle names, use the corner of a piece of paper as a right angle: hold it against each corner of the triangle. Wider than the paper corner is obtuse, narrower is acute, an exact fit is right. It turns an abstract 90° into something the student can see and feel.
6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo
Naming questions are the fastest points on a geometry section — most take under twenty seconds. Bank that time for the multi-step problems later in the set.
If a naming question takes you more than a minute, you are probably deciding between two names that are both true. Re-read the choices: only one of them is printed.
