One-Step Equations
Solving for x with inverse operations · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)
The problem
The equation says: some number, minus 17, leaves 8. To find that number, put the 17 back — add it.
x = 8 + 17 = 25. And the check settles it: 25 − 17 = 8. ✓
La ecuación dice: un número, menos 17, deja 8. Para hallar ese número, devuelve el 17 — súmalo.
x = 8 + 17 = 25. Y la comprobación lo confirma: 25 − 17 = 8. ✓
Do the same thing to both sides
x - 17 = 8
+ 17 + 17 add 17 to BOTH sides
---------------
x = 25 the 17s cancel on the left
An equation is a balance scale. Whatever you add to one side you must add to the other, or the scale tips and the equation is no longer true.
Adding 17 to the left cancels the −17 and leaves x alone — which was the whole goal. Adding 17 to the right keeps it balanced.
Testing all four choices
| Choice | Substitute into x − 17 | Is it 8? |
|---|---|---|
| 25 | 25 − 17 = 8 | Yes — correct |
| 9 | 9 − 17 = −8 | No |
| −9 | −9 − 17 = −26 | No |
| −25 | −25 − 17 = −42 | No |
Where the wrong answers come from
9 comes from subtracting instead of adding: 17 − 8 = 9. It is the right answer to a different equation — 17 − x = 8. Those two equations look almost the same and have completely different answers.
- x − 17 = 8 → x is the big number, and x = 25
- 17 − x = 8 → x is the amount removed, and x = 9
Read which side the x is on before you touch the numbers. −9 and −25 come from the same mix-up plus a sign error.
The four inverse operations
| Equation | What is done to x | Undo it by | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| x + a = b | adding | subtracting a from both sides | x + 6 = 13 → x = 7 |
| x − a = b | subtracting | adding a to both sides | x − 17 = 8 → x = 25 |
| ax = b | multiplying | dividing both sides by a | 4x = 32 → x = 8 |
| x ÷ a = b | dividing | multiplying both sides by a | x ÷ 3 = 5 → x = 15 |
Each operation is undone by its opposite. Addition and subtraction undo each other; multiplication and division undo each other. That is the entire content of one-step equations.
The same problem in words
Almost nobody says “she started with $9.” The money version is obvious: she must have started with more than she has left.
That instinct is the same mathematics. When the symbols confuse a student, turn the equation back into a story and the answer usually appears on its own.

1. Substitute the choices · Sustituye las opciones
On multiple choice you are not required to solve anything. Drop each number into the equation and keep the one that makes both sides equal.
It is self-checking: if two choices seem to work you made an arithmetic slip, and if none work you misread the equation. Neither can happen silently the way a solving error can.
2. Ask what is being done to x · Pregúntate qué le hacen a la x
Is something added to x? Subtracted from it? Multiplied by it? Divided into it? Name the operation out loud, then do the opposite to both sides.
“Seventeen is being subtracted, so I add seventeen.” Saying it prevents the reflex of copying whichever operation appears in the problem.
3. Watch which side the x is on · Fíjate de qué lado está la x
x − 17 = 8 and 17 − x = 8 are different equations with different answers: 25 and 9. Subtraction does not flip around the way addition does.
If x comes first, x is the larger amount and the answer will be bigger than the number on the right. If x comes second, x is being taken away, and the answer will be smaller. Deciding that before you compute rules out half the choices.
4. Keep both sides balanced · Mantén las dos partes equilibradas
Every change happens twice — once on each side. Writing “+17” under both sides, lined up in a column, makes it visible and keeps the equals sign honest.
A student who adds only to one side has changed the problem, not solved it. The column layout is the habit that prevents it.
5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante
Start with the story, not the symbols. “You spent seventeen dollars and you have eight left — how much did you bring?” Students answer twenty-five without hesitating, and then you show them that x − 17 = 8 is that same sentence written short.
For the balance idea, use a real scale or two stacks of cubes. Take blocks off one side and let the student watch it tip; ask what would fix it. When a student answers 9, don't mark it wrong — ask them to check it: “does nine minus seventeen give eight?” Substitution turns the correction into something they perform themselves.
6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo
One-step equations are twenty-second questions whether you solve or substitute. Take the extra five seconds to check your answer in the original equation — it is the cheapest insurance on the whole test.
Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each, so these should leave time for the multi-step problems later on.
