Place Value

Tens and tenths are not the same place · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)

The problem

In which of the following numbers are the digits in the tens place and tenths place the same?
English

Tens and tenths are two different places on opposite sides of the decimal point. The whole question is finding them without mixing them up.

In 345.46: the tens digit is 4 and the tenths digit is 4. They match, so that is the answer.

The tens digit is 4 and the tenths digit is 4 — the same digit in two very different places
The letters “th” mean you are to the right of the decimal point. Tens, hundreds, thousands are whole-number places. Tenths, hundredths, thousandths are pieces of one. If a place name ends in “-ths,” look right of the point; if it doesn't, look left.

Checking all four numbers

NumberTens digitTenths digitSame?
327.4224No — but its 2 does reappear in the hundredths place
372.4274No
345.4644Yes — correct
382.2482No
English

327.42 is the tempting one. Its tens digit is 2, and there is another 2 in the number — but that second 2 sits in the hundredths place, one column too far right.

Finding a repeated digit is not enough. It has to be in the two places the question named.

The mirror is the ones place, not the point

English

Students often expect tens and tenths to sit right next to each other, one on each side of the decimal point. They don't. The ones place is the center, and the pairs mirror around it: tens ↔ tenths, hundreds ↔ hundredths.

There is no such place as “oneths.” That is why the tens digit is two columns from the tenths digit, with the ones digit and the point in between.

The four steps, every time

English
1Find the decimal point and put your finger on it.
2Name the place asked for — does it end in “-ths”? That decides which direction to move.
3Count columns from the point — left: ones, tens, hundreds. Right: tenths, hundredths, thousandths.
4Read the digit sitting in that column, and only that one.

The digit and its value are different things

The 4 in the tens placedigit: 4  ·  value: 40
The 4 in the tenths placedigit: 4  ·  value: 0.4
English

Both digits are 4, but one is worth 40 and the other is worth four tenths — a hundred times smaller. That is the whole point of place value: where a digit sits decides what it is worth.

Read the question carefully. “Which digit is in the tenths place?” wants 4. “What is the value of the digit in the tenths place?” wants 0.4. Both appear on tests.

Reading the number out loud

345.46   =   "three hundred forty-five  AND  forty-six hundredths"

the word "and" is the decimal point

the last place named (hundredths) tells you
how many digits follow the point: 2
English

Saying a number the long way names its places for you. In “forty-six hundredths,” the word hundredths is doing the same job as the chart.

The word “and” belongs only at the decimal point — 345 is “three hundred forty-five,” not “three hundred and forty-five.” That convention is what makes the spoken form unambiguous.

Show / Mostrar:

1. Listen for the “-ths” · Escucha la terminación

English

Tens, hundreds, thousands — whole numbers, left of the point. Tenths, hundredths, thousandths — parts of one, right of the point. The three letters at the end of the word tell you which side of the number to look at.

Underline the “ths” in the question before you look at the number. It takes a second and it prevents the error the whole question is built around.

2. Count outward from the ones place · Cuenta desde las unidades

English

Put a finger on the digit just left of the point — that is ones. Moving left: tens, hundreds, thousands. Moving right past the point: tenths, hundredths, thousandths.

Counting from the ones place rather than from the end of the number means the answer does not change when the number gets longer. 5.4 and 12,345.4 have the same digit in the tenths place.

3. Write the chart in the margin · Escribe la tabla en el margen

English

Six words — hundreds, tens, ones, point, tenths, hundredths — written above the digits, take about eight seconds and make every place-value question on the page a matter of reading.

If several questions use the same number, the chart pays for itself immediately. Even on a single question it is faster than counting twice because you weren't sure the first time.

4. Digit or value? Read the question twice · ¿Dígito o valor? Lee dos veces

English

“What digit is in the tens place?” → a single number, 4. “What is the value of the digit in the tens place?” → 40.

Test writers include both answers among the choices, so knowing the place is only half the job. The word value is the signal to multiply the digit by what its column is worth.

5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante

English

Have the student write the number with one digit per box and label every box before answering anything. The labeling is the skill; once the columns are named, the question answers itself.

For tens versus tenths, use money: a ten-dollar bill and a dime. Both come from the word “ten,” but one is ten dollars and the other is a tenth of a dollar. When a student picks 327.42, don't say it's wrong — ask them to point to the tens digit and then the tenths digit and read both out loud. They will hear the mismatch themselves.

6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo

English

A place-value question is a ten-second question once the chart habit is automatic. The only thing that slows it down is second-guessing which side of the point to look at — and the “-ths” rule settles that instantly.

Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each. These should be among the fastest points you bank on the whole section.

Try this next / Practica esto: label the columns above the digits before answering any place-value question. If you missed one, check whether labeling would have caught it — for tens versus tenths, it always does.
