The Coordinate Plane

Reading and plotting ordered pairs · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)

The problem

In the xy-plane above, which of the points has the coordinates (4, −3) ?
English

An ordered pair is always (x, y) — across first, then up or down. Alphabetical order is the reminder: x comes before y.

For (4, −3): start at the origin, go 4 to the right, then 3 down. That lands on point C.

Walk the hallway before you climb the stairs. Always move sideways first, then up or down. Doing it in the other order lands you on a completely different point — which is exactly what separates C from D on this graph.

All four points, read carefully

PointAcross (x)Up or down (y)Coordinates
A3 right4 up(3, 4)
B4 right3 up(4, 3)
C4 right3 down(4, −3) — correct
D3 right4 down(3, −4)
English

These four points are built to catch two different mistakes at once:

  • B (4, 3) has the right numbers in the right order — but the wrong sign on y.
  • D (3, −4) has the right sign — but the numbers swapped.
  • A (3, 4) gets both wrong.

So checking only the digits, or only the signs, is not enough. Check the order and the direction.

Signs tell you the direction

x-coordinate (first)positive → right  ·  negative → left
y-coordinate (second)positive → up  ·  negative → down
(4, -3)      x = +4  ->  4 units RIGHT of the origin
             y = -3  ->  3 units DOWN from there

(0, 0) the origin, where the two axes cross

English

Quadrants are numbered with Roman numerals starting in the upper right and going counter-clockwise — the opposite of how a clock moves.

The signs alone tell you the quadrant, without plotting anything. A point with a positive x and a negative y is always in Quadrant IV.

The four steps, every time

English
1Find the origin — where the two axes cross, at (0, 0).
2Read the first number and move that far right (positive) or left (negative).
3Read the second number and move that far up (positive) or down (negative).
4Check the quadrant — do the signs match where you landed?

Show / Mostrar:

1. x before y, always · Primero x, luego y

English

The alphabet is the mnemonic: x comes before y, so across comes before up. Every ordered pair on every test follows this without exception.

Say it as you move: “four right, three down.” Narrating the two moves in order is what stops the swap, and the swap is half of all coordinate errors.

2. Use the signs before you look at the picture · Usa los signos antes de mirar el dibujo

English

(4, −3) is positive then negative, so it must be in the lower right — Quadrant IV. That eliminates every point above the x-axis before you count a single square.

On this graph, that one observation rules out A and B immediately and leaves only C and D to compare.

3. Trace with your finger, don't eyeball · Traza con el dedo, no calcules a ojo

English

From the point, slide straight down to the x-axis and read the number. Then slide straight across to the y-axis and read that one. Two slides, two numbers, in that order.

Points that sit near each other — like C at (4, −3) and D at (3, −4) — are impossible to tell apart by eye and trivial to tell apart by tracing.

4. Watch for the swapped pair · Cuidado con el par invertido

English

(4, 3) and (3, 4) are different points. So are (4, −3) and (3, −4). Test writers put both on the same graph precisely because the digits look identical at a glance.

When two answer choices use the same two numbers, the question is about order, not arithmetic. Slow down for exactly two seconds and check which number came first.

5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante

English

Use the building: “Walk down the hall, then take the stairs.” You can't reach room 4 on floor 3 by taking the stairs first. The hallway is x and the stairs are y, and the order is not optional.

Have the student physically trace from the origin with a finger, counting out loud, before writing anything. When a student picks D, don't say wrong — ask them to trace to D and say its coordinates aloud. Hearing themselves say “three right, four down” while the question asks for four and three does the correcting for you.

6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo

English

Reading a point off a graph is a fifteen-second question: check the signs, eliminate half the choices, then trace the survivors. No arithmetic is involved at all.

Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each, so coordinate questions bank time. Spend two of those saved seconds confirming you read x first.
