Math · Lesson 41
Writing a Perimeter Expression
Regular polygons and the expression 6x · 8-question timed quiz · Bilingual (English / Español)
The problem
Once he finds x, the length of each side, which expression gives the perimeter?
The answer is 6x. A hexagon has six sides, regular means all six are the same length, and perimeter is the distance around — so you add x six times, which is 6x.
Notice that the drawing labels only one side. That is not an oversight: in a regular polygon, one side tells you all of them.
What each wrong choice would mean
| Expression | What it actually describes | Value if x = 4 in |
|---|---|---|
| x6 | The relationship run backward — this is how you find one side from a known perimeter | 0.67 in |
| x2 | The area of a square with side x — and it comes out in square inches, not inches | 16 sq in |
| 6x | Six sides, each of length x — the perimeter | 24 in |
| 6x2 | Six of those squares — an area, not a distance | 96 sq in |
Two of the three wrong answers involve x2, and both fail the same test: squaring produces square inches. A perimeter is a length, so its expression can never have an exponent on the variable.
The x/6 choice is the interesting one. It is a real and useful relationship — if the perimeter is 42, each side is 42 ÷ 6 = 7. It just answers the opposite question from the one asked.
Worked out
A regular hexagon: 6 sides, all equal to x Perimeter = the distance all the way around x + x + x + x + x + x = 6x Check it with a number. If x = 4 inches: 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 24 inches 6 × 4 = 24 inches ✓ And backward, if the perimeter were 42: each side = 42 ÷ 6 = 7 (that is x = P/6)
The same rule for every regular polygon
| Regular shape | Sides | Perimeter if each side is x |
|---|---|---|
| Equilateral triangle | 3 | 3x |
| Square | 4 | 4x |
| Regular pentagon | 5 | 5x |
| Regular hexagon | 6 | 6x |
| Regular octagon | 8 | 8x |
There is only one rule here: perimeter = number of sides × side length. The coefficient in front of the variable is simply how many sides the shape has, so counting the sides in the picture gives you the answer directly.
This is also why the word regular matters so much. Without it, the six sides could all differ and no single-letter expression would work — you would have to name each side separately.
Reading the polygon names
A student who cannot remember what a hexagon is can still count the sides in the picture and write that number in front of the x. Encourage that — the drawing is given precisely so nobody has to rely on vocabulary.
As a paraprofessional, ask “how many sides do you see, and how long is each one?” Those two answers are the expression. The student writes 6 and x, and 6 next to x already means multiply.

1. Count the sides in the picture · Cuenta los lados en el dibujo
Do not rely on remembering that “hexagon” means six. The shape is drawn for you — put your pencil on each side and count. That number is the coefficient.
Six sides, each x long, gives 6x. The same picture with eight sides would give 8x. The counting is the whole method.
2. Test the expression with a real number · Prueba la expresión con un número real
Pretend x = 4. The real perimeter is 4 six times, or 24. Now check the choices: x/6 gives 0.67, x2 gives 16, 6x gives 24, 6x2 gives 96.
Only one matches. Substituting a number turns an abstract algebra question into arithmetic you can verify, and it works on almost every “which expression” item on the test.
3. Let the units eliminate the exponents · Deja que las unidades eliminen los exponentes
A perimeter is a distance, measured in inches or feet. An expression with x2 in it produces square inches — an area. So the moment you see an exponent in a perimeter question, that choice is out.
That single check removes two of the four options here without any arithmetic at all.
4. Know which direction the question runs · Sabe en qué dirección va la pregunta
Side to perimeter is multiplication: P = 6x. Perimeter to side is division: x = P ÷ 6. Both are true, and the question decides which one you want.
Leon is starting from a side and wants the perimeter, so he multiplies. Had the problem said “the perimeter is 42, how long is each side,” the dividing choice would have been correct.
5. How to explain this to a student · Cómo explicárselo a un estudiante
Have the student trace the hexagon with a finger, saying “x” out loud at each side: x, x, x, x, x, x. Then ask what they just said. Six x's. Write it: x + x + x + x + x + x = 6x. They derived the answer instead of recalling it.
If a student picks x2, ask what units their answer would be in. “Square inches” and “how far around” do not match, and hearing that mismatch in their own words fixes it better than being told.
6. Pace yourself on a timed test · Administra el tiempo
These are among the fastest points available. Count the sides, write that number in front of the variable, and pick the match. No computation is required at all.
Eight questions in ten minutes is 75 seconds each. An expression question like this should take fifteen, which banks time for the longer word problems.
No hace falta calcular nada.
