A Paraprofessional:
Supports the teacher in the classroom by providing additional assistance to students with special needs, promoting maximum academic and personal growth. The responsibilities of a substitute paraprofessional range from supplementing the regular classroom curriculum to assisting students individually.
Substitute paraprofessionals are also known as school aides, teacher assistants, instructional aides, one-on-one aides, and personal care aides.
Responsibilities
- Provide academic reinforcement to individual students or small groups
- Assist the teacher with classroom management and overall supervision
- Support administrative tasks such as preparing materials and setting up equipment
- Supervise students in the cafeteria, playground, special classes, hallways, field trips, and/or during before- or after-school programs
- Attend to the physical, personal, academic, and emotional needs of students
- Support students with special needs by following their IEP or 504 Plan accommodations
- Perform other duties as directed by the classroom teacher or school administration
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED minimum
- Valid state background check clearance
- Negative tuberculosis test obtained within 6 months prior to the start of employment
- You do not need a Social Security number to obtain this license — you can apply with your passport or ITIN.
